After grinding on some public ground Friday and Saturday, my son and I headed to the farm last night to hunt this morning. We’ve had some close calls and a blown opportunity on the public, so we were ready for a change.
With the weather being less then ideal for his birthday hunt, we decided to set up a blind and hopefully wait out a bird instead of chasing gobbles.
At 6:30 a hen flew in and became our companion for the next hour and a half, never straying far from our decoys. At 7:45 another hen showed up. I sent my brother in law a pic of them…he said that’s right where the toms were yesterday. Five minutes later they showed up, sprinted to the decoys and we had a double. Both Tom’s had 1.5” spurs, one had a 10” beard, the other was 10.5”, and they weighed 27 and 23.3 lbs respectively. It was a fun hunt and a great memory on my son’s 17th birthday.
