Is it legal to kill a deer during bow season, and have someone else that is hunting with you tag it? (Party hunting)

Okay, Im fine with that, but the Regs. are very vague.

What does Hunt with and assist mean?

"Helping other hunters

Resident and nonresident deer hunters with a valid deer hunting license may hunt with and assist other deer hunters only in the season specified on their license"

From Iowa Game Regs.

Assisting other hunters means you can drive deer, call, ect... but, you must use your tag on your animal and vise versa. Party hunting means you can put someone elses tag on your animal or they can use yours for their animal. Party hunting is not legal during any season but the shotgun seasons.

I agree that's what it should be,

But the "hunt with" part is confusing. Plus If you are just calling for someone and NOT carrying a weapon, why would you need a license?

Im sure many people mostly Nonres. are not sure about this law.

I think The regulations book should be written better, and to state that it is illegal to use your bow tag on somone elses deer.

It is clear but misunderstood.

The definition of party hunting is the ability to tag someone elses deer, assisting another hunter you can't. You need a license to assist another hunter.

So unless you have a kill tag in your possession, you cant hunt or kill deer with a bow during bow season, regardless if you have a hunting license or not.

But you can carry a gun and kill deer without a kill tag as long as you have a hunting license and are hunting with someone that has a kill tag, during gun season?

That seems strange to me, cause your DNR want so many deer killed, why cant you fill bow tags, like you can fill gun tags?

A valid deer license is needed in both cases (license, habitat stamp and deer tag).

You may continue to party hunt until the last tag in your group is filled.

When assisting another hunter if you have filled your tag, you still may assist but can not carry a weapon.
