Gas prices affecting your hunting?

My trips to my river ground has been cut in half the past couple months. I did finally put out a couple cameras last weekend.
I'm sure come hunting seasons my hunting trips will be greatly reduced. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif I love hunting and shooting my bows but other things will have higher importance.
One thing I have been doing is the "Hyper Mileage" driving that's been in the news. I haven't doubled the Suburbans mileage but I have improved it greatly simply by driving better and slowing down to 55 on the highways. In town I don't let the rpm ever exceed 2000 and usually keep it below 1600. Coasting to stops from a long distance also helps a lot. I may be driving slower that the flow of traffic but I've gotten to where I just smile and wave at those that flip me off. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif I am noticing more people doing the same thing I am which is good.

HAHA, yeah my 1/2 ton Silverado is going to be turning into a Colorado here shortly I'm afraid.

This is a great topic..I could really ramble. I feel as though people like myself are currently in somewhat of a recession, quite likely headed for a depression.

I personally planted a gigantic garden this year. Why? Well first and foremost so my family can eat healthy all summer and fall for minimal costs. Secondly, I'm going to swallow my pride and spend my fridays in the summer sitting in town at the Farmer's Market. People here actually spend a pretty good nickel to buy garden produce that is grown locally, not in some fancy pants place, loaded with chemical and altered conditions. I hate the thought of sitting there and having people look at me as someone who needs to sell veggies to make ends meet, but in reality, I need my fall fun money to come from somewhere.

I plan on doing alot less this summer, less fishing, I doubt I'll even get to golf...man is it expensive these days!!!!! Scouting trips will be done via mountain bike more times than not. I've got a real bad habit og buying a bottle of pepsi damn near everyday on my way home, that is setting me back almost $60 a month. Little things like that need to be tweaked. It will be interesting to see what is going on a few years from now.

I gained 3 MPG by doing some of this just on my daily work commute. A 20% increase in fuel economy will make a difference. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif I used to be the guy passing everyone on the interstate, now I'm the guy getting passed /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif.

One thing I will probably do this year is plan on staying out to the timber all day long and not making the drive back home during midday. Better planning of vacation days will be required!

We did too. We also focused on veggies that will can and freeze well to help during the winter. Plus we planted 32 tomatoes, 45 pepper (jalepanos, bannana, cayenne & habenaro) and rows of onions. We like to make Salsa /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I'm getting a bit over 17mpg with my 1/2 ton silverado going back and forth to work. Figured for as much as I need a full size truck, it wouldn't be worth switching.

Will the high gas price at least cut down on the Night time road poachers? or will they give up their Nat. lite and keep hunting? Just looking for a silver lining.

I still have a full size 3/4 ton GMC on the farm...you know...the truck that gets in on all the action! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

No need to swallow the pride, I do the same thing. I planted around 3/4 acre garden with mostly sweet corn and some vegtables, sending the wife to the farmers market on Saturday mornings /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I cut down on the amount of nick nacks and doo dadds I buy. I also walk away from the pop and candy machine at work after staring at it for a while. Doesn't seem like much, but when you start adding it up it's quite a bit. I holler at the kids and wife more now for leaving the door open when the air conditioning is on, and we've started cutting and splitting wood already for this winter. As far as my hunting time goes, the only difference is the amount of times I'm checking my cams this summer. It sucks cause I'm like a crack addict when it comes to wanting to run down and check the cameras. Minimum of two weeks is what I'm trying to stay at......we'll see how long I can hold out. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I would love to have the room to plant a huge garden like you guys. I'll just have to live with my 3 tomatoe plants, 2 peppers some cilantro and pumpkins and watermellon for now. With the expanding family i'm thinking of buying a new house and a serious garden is on the wish list for the new place. Not only would I be able to save a ton of money but the health benefits would be awesome too. I like not having to worry about other peoples fecees on my food.

I have two trips planned that will total about 3,600 miles round trip this fall, will the price of gas keep me from my hunting? Not a chance, got to keep the priorites straight. Guess I'll be working some OT to pay the way, too far to walk!

Anyone need a hunting partner? I will pay for gas /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif I bet Trail Camera sales will go up quite a bit as people won't be able to spend the $$$ in gas driving around every night looking for deer but can afford to check a cam once every 2-4 weeks. One thing about it though, its like dropping $1200 dollars on a new bow, when it comes to hunting price just doesn't matter. I have always lived on the cheap, I will buy the cheapest pair of blue jeans at Walmart and I cant stand to buy new clothes, but when it comes to hunting price doesn't matter.

I bet we will be able to tell by looking at the deer harvest trends over the next couple years how much it affects hunting. People are going to start to think well I can either buy an extra doe tag or 3 gallons of gas?

My recreational driving is definately limited but work driving is a nececssity.

My truck does not get much use on the weekends anymore.

I will hunt more of my hunting spots around home and not as much on my spots further out. When i do go i will take the saturn and if i get one go home and get the super duty. Or try getting him in the trunk that will look real good.

LIV4RUT, I'm with you on this one. I'll buy hunting stuff left and right, but when it comes to things like clothes, I just don't buy them, I'm 28 and still wearing clothes that I had in High School!

I'm the same way...I'm 25 and the only new clothes I get to wear are the ones my mom buys me for Christmas. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif I bought myself some new Scent Lok last year, though...so I guess that is new clothes. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

I started a little savings accout to start saving for the hunting season! I should be set by fall! As long as my wife doesn't find it! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to tote a bow and all my crap on the back of a dirt bike. Finally checked the gas milage on it, somewhere around 75 mph. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
