Last post was lacking for details so do a lil better job here .
Gator was 7.5 this year. He lived & ruled a very small area. Maybe 25-40 acres- getting lil smaller each year. At 5 I passed him same spot as last night & found his sheds there multiple years. Same at 6. His 5 year old sheds- one got run over with a Gator so hence his name.
Grew a lot from 3-4 & put a lil bit on at 5 but not enough so let him go. At 6 we came off that bad winter & late start to spring & didn’t grow. So he got a pass. This year he put on 6 more points around brows.
Where he lives - hard to hunt!!!! No good options for stand. I had to do a blind & tucked to edge of native grasses so entrance is bullet proof- got in blind with field full of deer. Ideal is the rare NE wind & we had it. So I had to sneak off to hunt. I saw him October 1 as well but got to 70 yards. Last night every deer in the woods seemed like made it past me. I was 30 mins from packing up & no deer. Last deer to come out all alone- GATOR. 100 yards maybe. I have a pine rub by me & hoping he wanted to hit it. I got him coming in with light grunt. He didn’t make it to pine at 20 yards & stayed out around 35. I was ok at 35 but just don’t like more. Shot as he quartered away- thought it was back but wasn’t 100% sure. He took 5 steps running into cedars. I grabbed my arrow & waited til AM. Well- pretty easy blood trail. He ran 30 yards. Right through vitals. Coyotes hammered him. Wasnt thrilled about that but better than a wounded deer or bumping a deer if I had hit him back. Perfect shot & dragging was a breeze. Time for some doe shooting & maybe bully bucks. Nothing else for great deer I’d like to shoot but be old bully regardless. Ate tags last year on a lot of deer that didn’t grow & glad we let em go. Most made it and sure made for a great October.
I’ll see if I post some pics of this spot or previous trail cams of past. He’s Lower 180’s with junk & mass. Don’t care bout score - did have tank of body & 7.5 he was pretty smart old dude. Hope everyone has a great, enjoyable & rewarding season!
Every sighting, shed & pic ever was probably under a 40 acre area.
