Gave her away

[ QUOTE ]
Congrats to you on raising her right.

I sometimes think that my kids have turned out so great not because of me but in spite of me. I did have a good example, however. My dad was a stern disciplinarian and he was not lazy in his discipline. We never doubted that he loved us, and didn't get away with much. He had a way of making his eyes burn through you and making statements that would stick with you for a lifetime. One thing that he demanded was that my brother and I treated our five sisters with respect at all times. Dang that was hard at times. Here's a couple of those statements that come back to me a lot. I remember one time that I did something that was a little shady as a kid in high school. Well it was just plain dishonest and my dad found out. I knew I was in big trouble. I not only got grounded for THREE WEEKS, but he gave me that look and made this statement, "Honesty is not the best policy, honesty is the ONLY policy."

Another time early in our marriage I was really upset with Cheri about letting the kids get away with some things I thought they shouldn't (she came from a very different background than I did). Dad gave me that look and said, "The best thing you can do for your kids is to love their mother."

I really feel for so many kids these days that do not have the influence of a loving and involved father. I think it is one of the greatest tragedies of this generation.

Your dad got it right, also. Each of my kids has, at different times been disrespectful to my wife, Janet. I simply pulled them aside, and informed them that she was my wife long before she was their mama, and any other disrespect to them would be treated as disrespect to me. They've turned out pretty well. I really don't look forward to the day when I walk Molly down the aisle. I wouldn't want it to NOT happen, but I'm definitely not ready now for it. In time, I guess. . .

Congrats to you and your daughter. I know every child wants and needs the attention that you gave your daughter. She is very lucky to have a father like you.You should be very proud.I had a simalar thing happen to me when i took my son to the airport to leave for the navy.I could tell that he was scared to leave home, but proud to serve his country. After he got on the plane and I started to drive home, I started to think about how proud I was of him, and tears just flowed. I had to pull over for a few minutes.Again Congrats !
