Good Boots

I am planning on trying some all day sits this year. The only part of my body that gets really cold are my feet. I was thinking about trying some electric socks this year. Has anyone ever tried them. What boots do you guys reccommend. I want something that I can still walk/hike decent in yet have enough insulation to keep warm all day.

I'm not an expert in this field, but I know that having a good pair of wool blended socks are just as important as the boots you wear around them. I think most "cold feet" are caused from sweat and the inability of a-lot of socks to draw the moisture away from your skin. I wear 800 gram LaCrosse rubber boots and a good pair of wool blended socks, and if I don't have to walk a mile to get to my stand, my feet stay fairly comfortable. Make sure your foot isn't too tight inside your boot, giving it a little room to breathe, and stay away from cotton pairs of socks. It isn't a terrible idea to also give your bare feet a quick coating of anti-persperant to help keep them from sweating in the first place. Hope this helps a little.

I use LaCrosse Burly's right up til december. I wear a thin polypro sock under my wool/polypro hunting socks. Keeps your feet dry while walking or sitting. If the temps get down in the teens I'll wear pac boots, if I plan an all day sit.

get some good socks first off. i use heavy wool socks in medium insulated boots. then put all that into a pair of arctic shield boot blankets. i use danner pronghorn boots with 400 gram insulation. i think a huge problem people have are using cotton socks which do not breath and keep the sweat in. use some medium or heavy weight wool socks and that will help out a lot. as far as boots goes, everyone has a different opinion on that matter. i'm a danner fan, always have been always will be. they do not stitch through their gore tex like rocky does, makes them last longer for the average hunter.

any other questions, ask away.

i wouldn't even waste any $$$'s on socks. I did and couldn't find any that worked decent except one brand, and they went through batteries like crazy. Best thing I've found is those foot warmer things that you stick to the bottom of your socks. You can get them at Walmart. I think they're about a $1.00 a pair. Sounds kinda high but I've been out in stands with frozen toes and would have paid much more than that to get my tooties warmed up.

I'll see how they work with my new Alfa-burleys

Roger that on the toe warmers Moose, the first ones I ever used would last about 4 hrs. The last ones I bought lasted a 2-3 hrs. They don't seem to give off any noticable odor. Unless you forget to change your socks

I have some of the X-static socks (aka X Scent) with the silver fibers in them and I think they are well worth the money. I wore a pair all weekend in rubber boots and they had no odor whatsoever and they wick the moisture away from you skin. You could also wear a pair of heavier socks over the top of the liner socks and have reasonable success with foot comfort.

Have I ever mentioned that I'm a self proclaimed expert on cold weather hunting!!!

We've already got some cold temps and 10" of snow so the cold weather gear is coming out. I don't monkey around with boots, the only ones good enough for extreme temps are too big and bulky, better for sitting around drinking beer and staring at a tip up while ice fishing. I go wool socks over little heating packets over another pair of wool socks, raw wool or alpaca wool is warmest. I top of my wool with a pair of big felt liners from a winter sorel type boot and slip on a rubber mocassion, we call them squaw moccassins up here, i really doubt you can get them south of the border, could be wrong. Anyways, when it gets cold I get serious about my feet, feet get cold easy and I honestly haven't found a boot that'll do the job and be feasible to hunt in. My patchwork home brew type boots may look crazy but no boot will give you the hot feet they do when the mercury crashed below -30.

Sask, Let's see some pics of that combination it sounds like you'd be ready for the circus the way I have them pictured. Sound warm though.

Although our winter months are milder here, my feet have always gotten cold up until last year. Last year I purchased a set of boot blankets and was one of my best purchases. This might sound crazy but once I was set up in my stand, very carefully I would slip off my boots and slide the boot blankets on. Had a couple of the hand warmers in each boot blanket and my feet never got cold! A little over kill but helps alot when you are staying in your stand for a long period of time.

Good Socks and Danner Pronghorns either 400 or 800 gram thinsulate are unreal. They are warm and extremely light to walk in.

Last year I purchased a over the boot product by Artic Shield. By far the best $50 bucks I ever spent in my life.
I slip them on when I get to my stand. The velcro is a little noisey, but my feet were never warmer... for what it's worth.

Danner Pronghorns are excellent boots, when it gets really cold I have a pair of the Artic Shield boot insulators to go over them. It is impossible to get cold with those things on.

I too use the danner pronghorns. For sox i picked up some backpacking sox from smart wool. Seems to be a good combination especially for long extended sits.

I saw on here several days ago that Kat wears strappy shoes.

I dont think she mentioned what type of socks she wears.

Doesn't seem to get cold enough in MN or IA anymore to worry about getting cold feet or is that just me. The last few years i have beenm into december with LAX 800gram rubber boots. Bought a pair of muck boots this year and they are extremely warm, and comfortable, just widh they were as tall as my LAX rubber boots.

I've done alot of winter camping in addition to cold weather hunting. If you want to wear a rigid boot i would sugest Danners. I have a pair of pronghorn 400's and frontier 1000's (for the really cold days) I would wear a pair of poly liner socks and then a pair of smartwools. If you want the warmest boot around i would sugest mucklucks. They don't have the suport of hunting boots but if you are just sitting that's the thing to use. check out www.mukluks.com
