Gov shutdown, USDA, farm bill, CRP

Going to be a critical time for conservation. Feels like we are a long way from a new farm bill or at least I haven't heard much about it.

Local USDA offices have been vacated so I doubt CRP payments are being processed.

Interesting times
FSA offices are closed for now. No payments until Gov opens back up unless something changes.

Figured that was the case. Whats interesting to me is CRP is a contract. Not paying a contract on time is a breach. Im sure there are people out there that count on CRP to make their farm payment. Not hard to imagine the legal ramifications of that.

Anyway.... more interested in a new farm bill. Our government is incredibly inefficient.

CRP hasn’t been paid on time in my case for 4+ years. The clause in contract is they are required to “pay interest” after October 1. Interesting fact…. The interest they pay when they are late is wildly less than the interest a guy is charged if they owe $ to government for past due taxes or anything like that ;).

Shut down the government because illegals need $ for healthcare. It’s almost as if we have an extreme wing of a party that speaks up far more for illegals, criminals, etc than citizens & law abiding working folks of this country. That sect of that party is going to complete ruin the D’s if they don’t get control of those maniacs that will implode the left or the country if they got their way.

Talked to my very helpful gal at FSA on Monday and she confirmed they will not be on time but i doubt they would have been on time anyway.

Typically interest is not paid until 30+ days after payment authorized. Never had interest on any CRP payment paid in October. From the ones I have talked to farm bill isn’t high on priority now as a lot of the pressing issues were in the OBBB. Commodity subsidies for low market prices are more priority than farm bill from what I am hearing.

I called the FSA and they answered today in Minnesota, NRCS guy called me back and I missed his call ? Why would they be open but others are not ?

ODD. There may be some “excepted” employees that could be still working on “mission critical” type work. MAYBE don’t know what that work might be. Could also be a state conservation person answering calls for NRCS. Be interesting if they can do much of anything other than answer the phones.

Offices open with limited staffing and limited services. Funding was moved around to pay these limited employees for a short time. Still have to have CR or full budget to get everyone back and all program availability.

I have a much bigger concern than delayed CRP payments.

All these people that got put on leave arnt going to wait around forever. Im sure many are already looking for another job. Major staff shortage possible or even probable depending on how much longer this goes on. So could be really hard to get anything done with those offices...

And not to mention trying to find a replacement for employees that jump ship. Who would be interested in those positions with the turmoil over government employment lately. So may be understaffed and/or lacking quality staff for awhile when the offices open back up.

I have ZERO concerns about Federal employees jumping ship. They'll get back pay for their time off - always have, always will to my recollection. They are getting a nice long vacation, paid for by us taxpayers..... sure, not their fault, but it's a paid for vacation IMO

Still waiting on my CRP checks and we have a big farm payment due we are counting on them for to help with. I really hope they get this shutdown figured out soon. Have barely heard any mention of how it’s affecting anyone besides the people on foodstamps. It’s sickening that’s it’s only about who wins and not about all the millions of people it’s affecting. Something needs to change. Drain the swamp!

Usually it's a week or 2...but just like those expecting CRP payments to pay for their farms by the taxpayers...those federal workers are working other jobs or getting loans because some don't know how to manage their finances.

Along with a high percentage of the population. Well over the majority do not have an emergency fund and live paycheck to paycheck.
Bingo. If I have to rely on something else to pay for what I want. I don't need it. (Yes, I did buy my first farm on a loan so I did get "assistance) Just wish I would have figured it out 20 yrs earlier
