Central Iowa

I had a Gray Fox work under me last night I squeaked him back in and studied him well. I haven't seen one in over 10 years. Just wondering if you guys ever see them? Are they more preveilent in certain areas of the state? Heres what they look like the one I seen was darker.

I've only seen one in my life. I thought it was a red when I shot it. At the time I wasn't familiar with gray's.

Here's the mount of it:

Speaking of...just pulled the card today and had a red and this one on it....just no big bucks. I used to see them quite a bit....then tapered off to a sighting every other year or so.

There was one in our area a few years ago. Somebody shot it though. It was a lot lighter colored.

Been about 10 years since I saw a grey. I think the increase in coyotes has dropped both red and grey populations.

I used to trap a lot of greys back in the 80's. When trapping really took a hit in the late 80's Mange practically wipoed them out, and took a lot of reds too. Then the increase in coyote population made it really difficult for them to make a comeback. Mange and an increase of coyotes has really taken their toll on them.

It is good to see them. A gray fox was one of the first animals I trapped back in about 1973.

Travis, i seen one a couple of years ago that was almost black. We see them quite a bit down south durring shotgun season.

i didn't know grey's were legal in iowa (hell, i didn't even know we had them)

hey shredder, if i bring some busch light, can i do some fox hunting?
