Great buck, huge step back. What gives?

I've had pics of this buck the last 3 years between myself and a couple neighbors. Pretty sure he is 4.5 in 2016, 5.5 last year when he was just ridiculous, and should be 6.5 this year. I had video of him in December last year looking fine. I've thought by first week of August antler growth really shuts down and if that's true for him, he will have lost a heck of a lot in one year. So I'm curious if that's what you guys have typically seen as far as antler growth in August, and if so, what thoughts are on what caused him to go kitty wompus and lose so much height.

Tips of the antler points are still very rounded. I would say he will put on quit a bit before the velvet comes off.

Possibly another deer? His brows for sure have similar characteristics but dang he looks maybe like different buck.

It is possible that he's older than I thought, but no one had pics of anything like that in years prior and we all run enough trail cameras that I'd think someone would have gotten him. I'm only thinking it is him because bucks around my place that are that flat coming off the skull with that kind of width are few and far between. In 2017 on his left side (right side as you look at him) he had that eye gouger and a sort of split brow thing going on as well. I'd be giddy if this guy isn't him, and Showtime (that's what we named him last year) is still out there somewhere avoiding cameras and looking anything like he did last year. My heart wants that to be the truth, but my brain says I've seen him enough to know this is him and something happened, either old age is setting in, or he had a mishap or something. I typically don't run cameras much in the summer though, so I'm very curious for those that do just how much they see antlers grow once you get into August.

I think all 3 bucks are different deer. The first two don’t match up and the third is completely different.

I'd agree that it's a difference deer as well. I hope for your sake that's the case. As far as growth in august, it completely depends on the deer. I would say the one pictured will put on some growth yet, but probably not a ton.

Well I'm liking the tune you guys are singing. Fingers crossed that this is another buck altogether, and that Showtime shows up and resembles what he was last year. I'll be very interested to see how much this critter puts on in August and will try to post pics so everyone can see what the difference is as he finishes out.

Based on what i'm seeing that's a different deer. Showtime could have a different summer home than winter home... Regardless, good luck!

Kudos to all those with the sharp eyes. This guy is not the deer I thought he was when I posted originally. He's a wide, short buck who actually lost a little bit from last year. Looks like he had some sort of minor injury in velvet, he might get a pass just out of curiosity to see what he looks like next year. I'm fairly certain he's 4.5 this year. Still no sign of the one I really want to see..... and not a single scrape yet.

I finally got what I was hoping for in confirmation that this guy was still alive and well. Now I'm hoping to make it so he is alive and well on the living room wall. Had another nice 10 with an already broken brow tine show up too, no such thing as too many!
