Great Day

To say it has been a frustrating but great season is an understatement.
Just ask JJohnson and JNRBRONC. It is a good thing I have unlimited texting this year. :way:

I have hunted with bow for three years and have not shot a Tom and was going to do it this season.

I have had numerous jakes within 5 yards and even a couple of Toms and a bearded lady but nothing to wrap a tag around until last Monday.

Last Sunday I went to the cabin and was going to do an afternoon hunt and hunt the next morning. I was set up at 4:00 oclock in a field with a ravine right in front of me so I could see them coming to roost regardless of which side they came in on. I had seven hens and two Toms come through at a 100 yards and would gobble to all my calls but would not commit. They went into the woods to roost and then from the other end right at dark I see another lone Tom go to roost.

I waited until dark and moved To where I seen the lone Tom and set up ready for the next morning.

The next morning came and I sat in the D.B. and The first gobble was only 30 yards away. A little close.

The other two were a liitle farther in the ravine but they lit up as soon as they heard him. The lone Tom pitched down and left while the hens with the two Toms came out 40 yards to my right with the two Toms in tow. A little too far for my standards so I decided to wait it out.

The Toms went over the hill following the hens and I thought it was over for a little while anyway. About that time the lone Tom was gobbling behind me and getting closer.
The hens in front of me with the Toms were also getting aggressive so I decided to tick them off and maybe they would come in with the other two Toms or the lone boy would make his move.

The Two Toms must of heard the Tom getting closer because I saw the fan coming over the hill with his buddy and 3 jakes.

They walked to within ten yards and looked at the DSD jake for a little too long. I put the pin on the boss and squeezed the release. I thought it was a great shot but where was my arrow. I looked and it was in him.
I was thinking just great now what?

The bird just went about his own business and it looked like he was not even hurt. He would sturt from time to time and follow the field with his buddies.

I got to a high advantage point and watched him for about a half hour just lay there with his buddy and jakes right by him. He would strut every once in awhile for them and then lay down.

He then walked into the woods and I thought I would never find him.

I gave him about an hour and then went to see where he went. After about 30 yards in the woods he got up and ran with my arrow still in him.
It was about 10:00 so I decided to back out and wait until 1 or 2 to trail him again.

I called up two buddies and a bird dog and went in about two and looked everywhere until 5 o'clock with no bird but a blood trail that had ended.
My buddies left and I was about to give up. I crossed a ravine and was looking for mushrooms when I looked up and there he was.

Game over.

First bird with a Tom and I am one happy guy not to mention I found 3-4 pounds of mushrooms an hour later.

Man it does not get any better than this.

Thanks for reading I have waited awhile to be able to put up a post like this.

Wow! Strutting with an arrow stuck in him and an obviously fatal injury? Amazing. Way to stay with it and congrats on a great bird.:way:
