green and dry scoring

I hate that you can't use the green score on your deer I think its stupid to only use the dry score. If the deer grew 186 inches of horn then that should be the score not the dry score after 60 days.

I just wanted to get yalls thoughts on this.

it keeps the scoring fair. lets just say theoretically, we both shoot identical deer, but you score yours right away and i don't get around to it til after it drys, yours could potentially score higher in the record books when you score it, but after it drys would be the same score as mine.

I don't care about fair! ;) I think its fair to the deer and hunter. The deer scores 186 it should be recorded as 186. The deer grew it that big so the score should be 186 but I understand where you come from.

to be honest, i don't care about record books either. i score my buck within a day or so of killing it and never put a tape to it again. I really just do it for the heck of it anyway, for my own info.

the only time green scoring has value is with especially large deer. You just wont see much shrinkage on a 150-160 and on down. In fact, chances are good you won't notice any... but with the larger deer, world class, you might see under an inch all around. Where there is more horn, there is more that can shrink...

but, im with Moose, I score it when I shoot it and thats what it scores....

First off, don't you have to kill a 150 - 160 to know that? And second, it's pretty easy to add up spikes right after you shoot em.......... just sayin :moon::D:D:D

Pretty much every deer I've shot over the years has lost 1% due to drying. I had a 170 for a couple months, then he was a 168 3/8 when I scored him for a big buck contest and I lost by 3/8

I have one buck that lost over an inch and a half. Most all shrinkage is in the spread, if you put a peice of 2x4 between the antlers while it drys the score will change very little if any.

So who shot a 186in deer?:)

definatley not him.

i think he was talking about this one?

The buck in my avitar was shot the last friday night before the 1st shotgun season in 2000. He has great mass and every circumference shrank 2/8 except one shrank 1/8
