What is your guys' tips for hunting on the ground? I hardly ever do it but I want to for youth season this year with a muzzeloader. Thanks for the opinions!
I read this book by Scott Bestul a few months back called "Secrets for Hunting Big Bucks" There was a chapter in there about ground hunting, and stalking/tracking. Great book, and very informative. I checked it out from the library. Good read, it may help you. Book Link

Make sure the wind is in the correct direction (not blowing to where you expect the deer to come out) and make sure you have some good back cover (something that breaks up your human shaped outline). Big oak trees, brush piles etc. make good back cover. Also make sure your comfortable. Since you are on the ground deer will be able to spot movement easier and if you are moving around alot because you are not comfortable it might mess up your hunt. Find yourself a nice seat so your comfortable, backcover to break up your outline and if the wind is right, you should be set.
I have pretty good luck hunting from the ground if I have the right wind and good background cover. I carry a little foldup 3 legged stool. I have had 2 1/2 old bucks as close as 10 yards and they never knew I was there.
It's something I try when I see bucks slipping in and out of a runway somewhere. Usually a one time sit but it can be productive.
I would suggest finding a spot that you can see what is going on around you, such as a top of a hill, logging road, etc. Also when ground hunting move as quietly as possible and move with a purpose don't just walk around aimlessly. Don't Move, you never know when they are going to be on top of you.
