Growl / Roar - follow up

For those who bought and used the new Roar & Growl calls this past season, how’d they work for you? I’d like to hear the good and bad.

I liked the Roar better than the Growl. I thought it sounded more like something you would hear out of a deer.
As for how it worked, the doe population in the areas I hunt are too high. The only thing it got the attention of were younger bucks.

I loved the growl. I called in quite a few bucks growling at them as well as a couple big boys that I couldn't get killed. The only thing I saw that might be a problem with some people is that if you are going to use it as a grunt, it is a very deep and mature buck grunt, all the time. And if you huff too hard it doesn't sound very good.

The buck roar is the best deer call I've spent money on. Of course I am biased as that call is the main reason I dropped my buck. Side by side comparison of them in store still leads me to believe that the BuckRoar is WAAAAY better than the BuckGrowl.

I would have to say the Buck Roar is by far the best grunt call I have ever owned.
Called in several during the rut with it just blind calling. Absolutely amazing. If they were a public company I would be buying stock in Primos.

I used it quite a few times during peak rut. Called to a decent, mature buck, passing too far away. He stopped, and looked my way. He did this 3 times, but never came in. I used it blind, several times, even with a doe bleat. Got 0 responses. One morn called to a young buck about 50 yrds out. He came right over to the Growl. I have heard any calling best used on bucks you see and want to come over. Blind calling not so good. Usually younger bucks respond. I am interested in what others saw while using it. The promoters of this call sure made it sound like best invention since "Sliced Bread", on the video.

Gee,, guess I must have been doin something wrong. I do have the Primos call. Sounded good to me? But maybe no fighting bucks on my land? At the times I used it. Am still confused with calling period. Some swear by it. Others say use only sparingly if any at all, cause spooks away more big bucks than brings. I am still confused??

I haven't had any experience with the growl but the roar is an awesome call. I didn't get a buck this year but I did call alot of them in with that call ranging from 2 1/2 year olds to a couple of 6 or 7 year old deer scoring anywhere from 150-180. I think the roar is the best grunt call on the market!

I did not have a buck come to the roar by using it blind, but then I rarely used it blind, I often used it in association with rattling.

I did have deer I could see respond to it, both positively and negatively. I think a lot of times people think the call is not working because the deer doesn't come in when they see it and call to it. If the deer can see over where you are, and he doesn't see a deer making that noise he hears, he's not going to come. Calling is best done where the deer can not see into the area where the noise is coming from, so he has to come closer to investigate.

I found that smaller bucks would tense up when they heard the sound. I had a couple mature bucks ignore it, which surprised me. I also had a 150-class ten pointer tuck his tail and sneak off. Boy that gave me confidence in the scrapes I was sitting over.

I feel good about the call, and I think it is going to be terrific in some cases, but I don't think it is going to totally change the way I hunt using calls.

I ditto the comments on the roar, hands down best sounding grunt call made. I had two mature bucks that I could visually see come in after a few rips on the buck roar, one on Nov. 1 the other on Dec. 18th, both of them ended up in my lap and one I passes on as I was holding out for something better and the other busted me as he came in downwind of me after I hit the call.

I also tested it on a few small bucks to see their response, most of the time using just a soft grunt, again same results with many of the deer coming into bow range. However, I did give the full out roar on a buck that I thought was bigger than he was during the rut, he ended up being about 120" 8 pointer and ran his butt off away from the call when I hit it. Anyway, it is well worth the money.

Had them both, gave the growl away. The roar is a better product IMO. Got alot more response to it, and it just has better sound. Best money spent this year was on the roar.

There are a lot of mixed reactions from these grunt tubes. I'm going to have to buy one and try it out! I've heard from some people they work great, while others have told me that they put them aside and grabbed their old truetalker.

i had lots great success with it, too much, to take up this whole forum with, and i did get to hear it on a couple occasions....
love it and i would recommend it to anybody

dont forget about the 'time and place' factor

I bought the Primos Roar on the advice of a couple of friends.

I had been using (not using, really) a grunt tube I picked up in the mid '80's. I quit using that call because I never had a deer respond to it and I thought it would be better suited to calling Mallards.

Anyhow, the first day out with the Primos, I grunted at a 1.5 year old buck that was about 80 yards out. He immediately turned my way. He wound up underneath me and since I had no intentions of shooting him, I felt pretty stupid. He hung around for what seemed like forever looking for the phantom buck that had grunted.

I never used it as a roar this season because I never felt the situation was right.

Some have commented that blind calling didn't produce. I find it difficult to place blame on a call in such a situation. There has to be a deer within hearing distance for the call to have any chance and what are the odds of that with blind calling?

Very early on bought the growl and quickly found out you couldn't blow too much air through it. Then bought the roar...definitely a better call! Very loud and a much better sound, imo.
Had mixed results with it over the course of this season.

I got the roar after reading of peoples success on here. Unfortunately I didn't have the same success with it. I did get a real nice deer to look at it, but not come over. I didn't have any other real positive experiences with it, but I also didn't have any negative ones either. I've always had more luck with the bleat can- you'll catch more flys with honey I guess.

Great thing about the Roar is that if you turn it around and inhale on it you can make much younger sounding grunts.

I used the roar this year.Had three 150+ class bucks crossing a field together the second week of nov. that seemed strange to me.They were about 350 yds. away so I thought I would give it a try. This stand is also close to the interstate so with the distance and noise I did not know if they would hear me.I let the first one rip and stopped them in their track amd they looked my way. They started to move again so I hit it again and they stopped. After several more times the third buck came running in my direction,so I grabbed my bow and hit it a couple more times. It took him about 15 min.to come through the timber and he ended up backdooring me but came in to about 8 yrds directly behind my stand.Facing him I needed him to turn to my left, but went right not offering a shot and watched him walk off.
