NEWS: Report Finds U.S. Guns Small Factor in Mexican Crimes

Fox News has shot a serious hole in the claims by anti-gun supporters that 90 percent of guns used in Mexico to commit crimes come from the United States.
These claims have been made by Sen. Hilary Clinton, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, William Hoover, assistant director for field operations for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and CBS reporter Bob Schieffer. Unfortunately, the claims are not backed up by fact.
Fox News has found that as little as 17 percent of the recovered firearms used in Mexican crimes are traced back to the U.S. The actual “90-percent” statistic is found within the 17 percent: “over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.," an ATF spokeswoman clarified.
Unless the weapon recovered at the crime scene has a traceable U.S. serial number, it is not sent back to the U.S. for tracing, the news report stated.
"Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market," Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told Fox News.
