Hard Horn!!

I was watching about 10 bucks and 15 does feeding in an alfalfa field last night. As I started to leave, a 135 class ten pointer strolled out at about 50 yards. I was very surprised to see that he had already lost all of his velvet and was in "hard horn". Seems pretty early to me, but there was no doubt about it. I watched him for about 5 minutes before he slipped back into the timber. Gets the blood boiling even more!!

That does seem a little early. About 10-15 days from now is when I usually spot the first one out of velvet. I did watch two different sets of 1&1/2 yr olds sparing this week so I would say they are done growing.

Alfalfa already, we're not even planting ours til next week. Our deer are still growing in velvet. What a difference a few hundred miles makes.

I had a friend insist that he saw one in hard horn three weeks ago. I meant top post and get comments but never got around to it. I was very skeptical but this guy has been around deer and deer hunting longer than me.

Saw a beautiful 5X5 this morning who has shed his velvet. He must have just shed because the antlers were still very red in color but he had definitly lost all his velvet.

A guy told me yesterday he saw a group of 5 out that had all shed their velvet. 2 days ago while checking a cam I came across a scrape that had tine marks in it!

My cousin was trimming shooting lanes this weekend and found a tree that had been rubbed and it still had blood and small strings of velvet on it! "Lets get it on!!"
