I love my Hawks but I can't argue with that. They just didn't get it done again. I don't know about Alford's future.

Did they really not get an invite? I find that hard to believe since they finished in 4th place in the big Ten and have the league leading scorer.

I really thought they still had a chance to still make the NCAA until they gave one to Penn State.

I have to admit, IA was better this year than a lot of people thought they would be after loosing an entire starting roster besides Haluska. I figured they were a 500 team at best, but they beat that so. Anyhow, I dislike Alford as much as the next guy, but he is hear to stay, contract was extended until at least 2011 and I think 2013 and the Hawks have never bought a contract out in order to get rid of someone. Just look at the wayward final years of Davis and Fry, should have been bought out and had some one in there before the programs fell apart but they wouldn't do it.

Until then go Orange and Blue

This is probably Alfords best year coaching of his career. No one expected Iowa to have a .500 season, let alone a winning season. He will probably get some recognition from his peers for his performance this season.

That being said, I was one that did not want his contract renewed.

You guys up in Whitetail heaven can't have it all... Rock Chalk! We BETTER make it past the first round this year! Go KU!!!

Im sure you will make it past round one, but not sure about the Kentucky or the Salukis in round 2 and 3.

I love the Big 12, but they'll choke, they always do!

Not making the post season is the kiss of death in recruiting wars. I fear this is the beginning of what could be a long drought.

We seriously need to can Alford.... been a LONG time coming.

That OR pay him what he's actually worth, perhaps 1/4th his current salary or less. I personally wish they would hire a standout coach at an unknown college and pay him 1/8th what Alford is getting. Worst case scenario we'd save money and have the same miserable outcome each year; Best case we would actually get into the dance each year with probably a first round exit (like Dr. Tom virtually guaranteed). Either way we'd be better off.

Just like another conflict we've been having - we need an EXIT strategy not an ESCALATION - for Alford

Seriously though, how many other bball coaches out there are making a Million and change (not counting bonuses and endorsements) and not making it into at least the Nobody Important Tournament???

As an outsider, not being a part of the Alford debates, what has happened at Iowa with him has really surprised me. I truly thought it was going to be a match made in heaven. He came in so hot. I was ready to see 'em take it to Michigan State every year -- ever since Cleeves and company got a free pass against Phizer and Iowa state, I've hated that team!!

Steve's run his course. Just think how bad the Hawks would have been if Wayne Morgan would have showed some love to Adam Huluska and Adam would have stayed at Iowa State.

Just proves you can't fire an important part of your coaching staff (Greg Lansing) to save your own a$$ and expect players to respect you. I think the hawks may be going south in a hurry...especially since Iowa State landed McDermontt.

Who am I kidding, I don't like basketball anyway...I prefer wrestling.

I took Kansas the whole way in my bracket.

I like Alford and I think he is a good coach on the floor but for some reason he can't seem to recruit great players, even within the state. We are losing some of Iowa's best players to other colleges. I agree that he did a good job with the team he had this year, I never expected them to finish in 4th place int he Big 10. Losing to Drake and Penn State still makes me shake my head... it's like each time they take the floor you wonder which team is going to show up. I guess that's part of the problem when you depend on one guy for most of your scoring.

There are some bight spots, though. If it wasn't for Greg Oden, I think Tyler Smith would be getting a lot more attention as top freshman in the big 10. The kid has a lot of potential. Alford needs some recruits to go with him!

As a UNI athletic alum, I bleed purple and gold. I can't stand the Hawkeyes what so ever, but I agree they should have gotten an NIT bid. Alford does stink, not only as a coach, but as a person. The stories I've heard coming out of that program are ridiculous. But I think UNI should have been in the NIT above Iowa!! haha

I agree, UNI is a much better team than Iowa, and deserved to get into the NIT.

The thing I hate about Alford, his inflated ego and off court antics aside, is how grossly overweight his contract situation is - it's downright obese! $2 million to buy him out? Whatever happened to "pay for performance"? And why is it that a top coach (or executive for that matter) can ask to renegotiate for a fatter contract every year if they actually win games? There should be some modicum of performance required each season. They hand out bonuses for things like successfully graduating athletes, winning the conference championship, NCAA berths and so on, so why can't they factor in demerits for a losing season, poor ticket sales, and having no post season play whatsoever?? Something like: if there is no post season, you forfeit half your salary.

Instead, if a college coach exceeds expectations, he can simply have lunch with the AD and fatten up his already obscene salary arrangements? PLEASE. A signature on a piece of paper doesn't mean much these days, unless the person you are working for wants to see you leave, in which case they have to "buy out" your contract? What's wrong with this system? EVERYTHING.

He's losing top recruits because NO ONE respects him OR the program he created. Period. Time to cough up the coin and send him packing.

The way it sounds is that AD Gary Barta is going to give Alford next year to prove himself or he is gone.He is not going to put up with every other year being a rebuilding year.Alfords Assoc.Head Coach Craig Neal is looking at a head coaching job at a college in Denver and has alot of contacts in that town and is known as one of the top Assoc.Coach in the country. He has done more with the players then Steve and was the one that brought Tyler Smith to Iowa.I think that if they lose Coach Neal and dont make it to the big dance next year,Alford will be bought out and Tyler Smith will enter the NBA draft.
