Hebicides to use with oats and clover?

I was wondering what were your choices in herbicides available when planting oats with clover and alfalfa. I recall seeing it in one of the threads but couldn't find it now. As I'm planning on using the oats as a nurse crop till the clover and alfalfa take off. In another area if was hoping on using clover with oats and letting the oats go to seed for some fall turkey hunting as well.

With winter rye what area our herbicide choices with clover and alfalfa?

Has anyone seen deer eat cat food before? We have a small herd that comes to our back yard daily and last night when I went downstairs I saw one of the deer eating the cat food my wife puts out for a few strays. I know cat food is mostly grain but I never thought a deer would eat it.

Generally the idea behind using oats for a cover/nurse crop is for the oats to hold down weeds while the clover or alfalfa is small and becoming established.

So usually herbicide is not neded or used, but BUTYRAC® 200 (2-4DB) will control broadleaves with out harming clover, alfalfa or oats.

Select 2-EC grass herbicide will kill grasses including the oats however, it will work in a bind if foxtail or some such should become a problem.

It's the same thing with rye, although rye is a fall crop and it's usually planted to late to allow for alfalfa establishment (not impossible but pushinh ones luck!).

Clover and rye work alright because clover doesn't need as long of an establishment period in the fall.

Cold weather will nuke weeds so no worries about herbicides and just clipping the following spring will take of most any problems.

Check the herbicide thread for labels and more detailed info as far as rates and holler back if you have more questions. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I think your right, the other day there were 16 or 17 deer in my back yard on my septic mound. The snow wasn't as deep there and they were eating some of the feed I put out nearby. I actually called a friend to bring over a few bales of some alfalfa/clover hay. Last time I picked up a mix with timothy in it and they were picky.

Thanks for the info with the 2-4db, right now I can see 7 deer in the back yard, with the snow on the ground you can see them in the dark. My concern is that a few of them are getting too used to being around my yard. They aren't running away when my daughter takes the feed out to them and today they were watching me cook on the grill. Next thing you know the wife will say don't shoot them their like pets.
