Help Please...

As a fellow educator, kudos, this is a neat project. Gladiator, not sure if you use Skype, etc., but you could probably get quite a few professionals like AZHunter to talk and answer questions (I'm sure you already thought of that though).

We've kicked around the idea of Skype and our office is set up for VTC, but I wouldn't have the time to sit an entire day to cover all the classes, which is unfortunate. I'd only be able to sit for one class with my schedule and workload.

Gladiator, I thought you should know that, so far, I've responded to 2 out of 3 emails and I'm waiting to hear back from one young lady whom I gave my availability for a phone call and told her email was just as fine. Kudos to your students for their good questions and overall respect and politeness!

On a side note, reading "Mr. Thede" makes me giggle a little. I want to correct them with "He's GLADIATOR!" :way:

I'll contribute as well. But you should be aware that I am biased against NR deer hunters. I don't think that just owning land here should allow you to bypass the NR tag system.

Had several students contact me. Please let me know if they have follow up questions or need additional explanation. Very cool project from what I have seen so far.

Thanks so much for taking the time. I'm sure you're all getting tired of answering the same questions, but I think they're gaining a good perspective on what is going on around them in their state. I will tell them to feel free to contact you for any other explanations. Please feel free to give your own thoughts on anything else. And again, please copy/paste your same answers to save on your typing.

And let me know if any are disrespectful or rude....I sure hope they are courteous. :thrwrck:

Yes, would love for AZHunter to skype in if he has time. Even one class would be fantastic...or anyone else for that matter.

I will be sure to post some samples of their finished products after they debate with all other interest groups. They need to come up with ONE solution with all other groups to present their recommendations to the DNR. :way:

My fingers are tired, but I believe I answered all questions without putting too much of my personal opinion in it.
If there are any follow up questions feel free to have any students send me a follow up email

I've answered two emails and two phone calls. Ive been answering the questions as views of the insurance industry as opposed to my personal views which drives me nuts but all in the name of preserving the integrity of the project!

I just answered two e-mails, and I did included my personal views and opinions. I did cheat a little because I wrote a couple of pages to the first young man who sent a pretty complete list of questions. Then when I received the second email I just sent him the same reply because his questions were basically the same. Keep up the good work and please let us know how the young people absorbed all of this information.

I just wanted to let you know that I just received a very nice thank you email from Hunter. You should know when they do things correctly as well as when they don't and he was very polite with his questions and the thank you. Please don't blame me if I warped his thinking on this subject, I just told him my honest opinion.

Excellent!!!

That's what we like to hear! :way:

Wow - I wish all of you could sit in on our class debates and listen to the conversations that are happening in my room right now...

Last class period alone, they came up with the following solutions to try to meet all interest groups involved - I will post more recommendations as more debates happen in other periods....

  • Get rid of the late-season antlerless tags and move to September for 2 weeks. (Rationale is no does with embryos would be shot. People are generally excited to get out and hunt so the 33% tag-filling would be increased and there would be more filled tags compared to tags bought. This would lower the numbers slightly to make farmers/insurance agencies happier while not increasing # of tags and shooting bucks during the late-season)
  • Prevent farmers from bulldozing land for crops - this would maintain habitat for deer. Create habitat for deer to live - whether that be public ground or even a reserve for protection
  • Lastly, they wanted to increase NR tags to one every 2 years guaranteed instead of the 3 years (on average) it is now, but increase the tag price to $1,000 as a compromise.
I was very pleased with their knowledge and how much thought and defense they put into this....all on their own.

THanks SO MUCH for all the people that took time to help our kids and give interviews and emails....much, much appreciated!

This idea is actually an awesome idea. I would have to agree with that except that many deer may go nocturnal for bow season.

The current class (currently debating right now) have an overwhelming response that the DNR should be the one to regulate the deer population vs. lawmakers....

Smart class right there. I know I explained to one of your students the difference between wildlife management professionals and politicians managing wildlife.

Good talking to you the other night, by the way!

Current class is now discussing keeping the population the exact same it is now - however, they want to closely monitor "hot spots" and allow depredation tags where deer are out of control. This would limit the 'damage' deer do in those areas....and give farmers a little more control of 'pests' on their properties should they not want them...

Sounds like you have a smart class there. The early september season is a great idea. I amswered all of the emails i received and your students were very curteous. Nice project Gladiator.
