I would like to start shooting a long bow after 15 years with a compound. What do I need to know? Anything about the arrow shelf? length? weight? limb design? Does anyone know where I can get a used Left hand long bow for reasonable money? Any help would be appriciated!!

The Trad Gang will help you with learning about all the choices. You may be able to search their archives and find a lot of what you're interested in. Use the POW WOW forum.

If I were to give you what I think is the most important advice in shooting a trad bow, it would be to not overbow yourself. A 50lb bow will drop whitetails and elk with ease. It's all a matter of how well you can accurately handle the bow. Many people buy bows in poundages comparable to their compounds and are never able to enjoy the bow because they can't controll that kind of weight without letoff.

Part of the fun of trad archery is that once you learn about all the differences in bow design and specs, you will want to find a bow that compliments you and a your shooting style. There are an incredible amount of custom bowyers out there now. The sky's pretty much the limit.

Good luck

One thing you will find out quickly, is that it will take you about 10x the practice time with a stykbow as it does with a compound ! It will also cut your effective range by a third or so. But when you take your first animal with a longbow it truly is something sweet! I shot longbows and recurves for about 18 yrs or so, I no longer have the time I consider necassary to keep ethical with them, so I shoot a compound. practice alot, know your limits, and ENJOY!!!!
