MN Hunter

I am posting a link to an online petition to the continuation of antler point restrictions and no-crossing. A bill has been started to repeal these current restrictions. Basihttp://www.change.org/petitions/support-the-continuation-and-expansion-of-antler-point-restrictions-in-minnesota-sf-943-and-hf984cally all the studies and and hunter surveys and being thrown out the window. Some big money interest groups such as Minnesota Deer Hunters Association are heading this bill. Ironically MNDHA is based out of Grand Rapids, MN and they are trying to change hunting laws that are only intact for extreme Southeastern Minnesota, Zone 3. This state is already light years behind other states in terms of deer management. We were finally getting a little progress and change was in place and now they want to go back to the way it was before. 'Tradition' as they keep stating. Another reason to sign this petition Iowa residents as it may keep a few more non-residents out of your beautiful state during deer season!

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Just to be clear, by signing this, you want to continue restrictions that limit the bucks folks are shooting? If so, it's better than nothing & I'd sign. You all need to get your heads out of the sand and move the gun hunting to late Nov or early Dec and not the SILLY idea you have now of rifles during peak rut- what a joke and your poor bow hunters get a tiny fraction of good days of hunting we do here- with warm weather in early Nov- many guys could only get 4-5 days of really good bow hunting- what a joke! That would be the better solution BUT take what you can get up there.

The DNR can regulate that a bass has to be 12" or whatever (for good reason), you can't shoot a female pheasant, can't keep a 18" pike, etc, etc. Don't regulate deer though, you're a greedy, unhappy, piece of garbage trophy hunter if you advocate better deer age structure, ratio, increase the amount of mature bucks, shoot more does if needed, etc. I wish I could magically move out the gun season to Dec 1 in about 12 states and we'd then have 13 states with premium hunting that folks would flock to, instead of leaving in droves. Sorry for the rant, the old-schoolers really make my blood boil with trying to keep the status-quo of GARBAGE MANAGEMENT IN PLACE!

Skip...I cannot agree more, the state of deer hunting in MN is just poor compared to it's potential.

I remember as a 8-10 year old carrying my bb gun in the 70's with my dad while pheasant hunting. We would kick up one or two, sometimes 3 monster bucks each day we hunted pheasants, all on different farms.
These giant bucks only had to avoid hunters one weekend and then live until the next year.

That was when there was one weekend of gun hunting, and we had a lot fewer deer than we have now. In 2011, the gun season is 9 days or longer right during the rut and then followed up by a 16 day muzzleloader season statewide. It is pathetic, I don't know how a buck makes it after 25 days or more of gun hunting??

They dont make it. To damn many hunting seasons!!!! MN is pathetic for deer managment. The bad thing is that we have the potentiol for big buck we just need them to get some age on them. Last november We counted 30 bucks ion our county that were 120 to 130 inch 2 to 3 year olds. And everybody thought they were monsters. come on man think about it they all needed a couple more years then they would of been monsters!!! I just pisses me off. Now this year they wont be sh#@$ to shoot and they will all be bitchin cause there aint no bucks WELL DA!!!!

sligh,

I'm all for getting the gun season out of the rut. We have been saying that for years up here. Only to hear 'its tradition' argument as to why they need to have it the way it is. We wouldnt need and APRs or laws similar to that if the gun season was out of the rut. In my zone we have 18 days of slug season followed by a 16 day muzzleloader season. Talk about a crying shame. If it wasn't for individual efforts on QDM management practices this state would be even worse than it is. But if APRs are overturned it will be back to the same old status quo. The gunners will be blasting at everything that appears to be a deer. At least now they have to stop and look and see if it has 4 points to a side. Those same people are bitching that they cant shoot a deer, its too tough. Oh passing a first year 5 pt is tough. Im sure shooting a doe or its fawns is doing the impossible. This whole topic makes we want to join my other 3 friends and move to Iowa to get residency.
