Help

 Need some help. Stuck a nice ten point tonight. Quartering away. Thought I hit back rib to the opposite shoulder. Evidently I hit a twig that deflected the arrow. I didn't get a pass through. Instead I have an arrow with six inches of penetration. Very dark blood. Meat on the broad-head. And straight coarse long white hair with very fine white fuzz. No brown hair at all. There is a very slight blood trail. At first I thought I hit the bottom part of the deer but that wouldn't explain six inches of penetration or the chunk of meat. So I theorize that somehow I got up in the upper leg of the deer and hit the shoulder bone. However this was a huge buck and 6 inches falls way short of going to the opposite shoulder. The buck carried the arrow with him for twenty yards and pulled it out in a clearing. So I assume that I hit under the shoulder crease and lodged in the shoulder. I'm thinking not a lethal shot but I don't know. I'm going back out with a good light and see if I can find him. Any thoughts? I hate twigs.

Lots of guys out hunting pastor but I am sure you'll get some good input soon. Personally, I think you hit the brisket and that deer will be fine. STILL, you must exhaust all day looking or until you are sure he isn't dead, but the long white hairs that encompass the brisket area, the meat, lack of penetration scream brisket.

That area is very vascular but not vital. You likely will find good blood for 100 yards then it may just stop. If you get past 200 yards it likely is but then again, you never know? Hope that helps but I have been there and its no fun, but the predator/prey relationship is just that, although we often don't think of it that way. Sometimes they win :) Good luck!

not much to say here. Quartering away shot, had some branches in the way, and you you don't know for sure where you hit the deer. Look like crazy and hopefully you find him or see him moving away just fine. We've all been there, good luck.

Thanks guys. Yeah I thought brisket but with white fuzz and the arrow staying in for twenty yards? I talked to a taxidermist today and he told me that it sounded like I hit the armpit. That would explain the penetration, the fuzz, the the long white hair, etc. The only thing I can figure is that I had ricochet. There wasn't more than a couple of drops of blood that we could find. Spent over 8 hours looking and used 5 people. No deer. Good news is that a big ten point fitting his description walked by me this morning. I figured that it might be him but we started looking as soon as we had enough light. No doubt about it the bucks are cruising. Thanks again.
