HF 2657 - special lottery for non-residents

There's so much nonsense here, I can't get thru it all. At least not today......
I'll say this, if many on here are worried about the passage of the bill because land prices would skyrocket, NR's would be be pushing out residents and farmers from buying ground, etc. Then why are you same people not pissed off at the guy who owns this site. He came from Michigan I believe, bought and sold over 200 farms, most or all in Iowa I'd assume. He came to Iowa to specifically exploit the deer resource, did he not? The same thing Lee and Tiffany Locosky (sic) did. Didn't those capitalistic efforts raise the prices on land for everyone? Including residents? Didn't it bring more NR's into Iowa that aren't part of the community because they don't live in Iowa? Where's the outrage? He singularly probably caused more of the "harm" you guys are worried about than everyone else on here,,,,combined. Haven't heard a peep about that. Interesting. Telling. Fascinating actually. Blind spot.

And then, the real hypocritical part - he rants about people staying in their own state and fix your own states' problems.....because, um.. that's not what he did now is it. Pot meet kettle.....Let me know when you're moving back to Mi. I'll mark my calendar.
Skips done as much or more than anyone to protect Iowas deer herd. Sounds like your upset things didn’t go your way, don’t worry we’ll keep fighting to make sure they never do.

Deer down is way way off about Skip. I do think he’s on about damage done by the video stars. The hunting shows exposed the state, brought hunters, brought money, caused land value increase, facilitated large parcel break up for affordability, resulting in more hunters in block sections that drives down buck age structure.

The answer is to own as much as you can and do your part with herd structure. The exposure is a bullet fired that can never be recalled.

You don't know that. You are guessing. But this crowd seems to like to jump to conclusions.
In a lot of cases- I would agree with u - sometimes wild claims are made. In this case, That’s actually not paranoia. I know who the person is. It’s actually pretty well established that a NRLO in Jane’s district had been lobbying her very hard. She has a small handful of folks in her district as well that have asked her to get buck tags for their kids that moved away.

Really fair post!!! I mean that!! & make no mistake- everyone on this site should be having hard debates if done respectfully!!! I am glad this isn’t an echo chamber. & posts like this are 10000% valid & guess what…. I’ve thought about a lot of this myself for years. I’ll be another level of honest here…. I do at times realize some hypocrisy of what I do & realize “I’m part of the problem”. Like- I’ve leased land in my past When a smokeless ML came out or a cell cam- I joined right in. I bought land & displaced folks. I fully admit this. I also would say we all in some form could be part of the problem. That leads me to go: how can each one of us leave it better or fix these issues? In very simplistic terms there becomes 2 groups: those that won’t do a thing to make things better for others & those that will.

I’ll give u super brief history here….. at 12-15-ish I got kicked off my Great uncles 40 which was the only private access I had. He died & land was sold. Spent years on public (ruined!!!!!) & getting kicked off of every little farm “we leased it now”. “My grand kids going out”. “We sold it”. Whatever … 30+ years ago I saw the handwriting on the wall “I better buy something or I’ll have no where to go or have any decent quality hunting”. Iowa is simply 20 years behind MI on all that stuff. Yep- I loved iowa so much that I didn’t buy here & get NR tags 25 years ago. Or buy it and try to change Iowas laws still living in MI. I moved here. I didn’t move here to EXPLOIT iowa- I moved here because I love it, it’s my home and I will be a fierce defender of it to my dying day!
Let’s fast forward through this entire process…. I own land here, pay taxes 365 here, employ people & spend money at local businesses 365 days a year. Since moving here I have probably let, who knows, 400-1,000 people hunt my farms- R or NR. Pry 20 guys on this site have hunted my farms. Of the deer shot off my farms, even the big ones, I maybe have shot 10% of them. Or less- who knows. Of the farms I own today- 90% were owned by NR’s. My home farm was 4 different NRLO’s all from WI. I’ve had farms where 1 guy showed up 2 weeks to hunt it & now it allows for 5-10 folks to hunt it. So….. I’m trying to do my part- not just talk but act. & yes, I’ve freed up far more access than I’ve limited. I also look at this far beyond my own farm. I actually don’t care about my own situation at all. I care about the state & the everyday kid or guys experience. I want it better for everyone. I don’t want it to be “I have to have a big chunk for great hunting”. I want it to be a quality experience across the state. Even in other states. That ONLY comes through conservative tight regulations with biology & common sense blended in. It also prioritizes the residents of any state first- as it should.
If there’s a miss on what I’m doing, my goals or if someone thought I was out for my own selfish desires - I’d gladly talk about it or course correct if any was accurate. I’m not perfect. I want the best for the RESOURCE that’s been ignored largely for 10+ years & I want whats best for the future hunters so they can have as good or better experiences & opportunities I have had.

& hey… I realized…. This blends & leaves us to the redemption story of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins. Taking the burden away from all the wrongs we do all commit - we are all guilty & he washed it away with his death & resurrection just under 2,000 years ago. HAPPY EASTER to you all.

Skip let me hunt his farms a few times. I think he always put me in the bad spots though because I never saw the target deer but I did see a mega typical that broke my heart on the do not shoot list. lol.
He does however usually let me turkey hunt when I ask and that means more to me than he knows because turkeys> deer and we don’t have turkeys by home. I’ve also done work with him and he’s taught me a lot not only about deer hunting but about life.

He was never a NR begging to change Iowa’s regulations for his benefit though. Instead he moved here. I still remember hearing him tell the stories of the first time he brought his brother to Iowa and they were excited about seeing cows.

Hahahaha!!!! I go to no man’s land for work for a few weeks and miss one of the most ignorant statements of all time. How on earth does someone moving to Iowa and investing all of his time, money, energy, raise a family, fight for our state and it’s hunting etc. compare to someone who just wants to come here for a week and kill our deer?? Could go into details but the ol’ Tommy Boy quote of “next thing you know your wallet is missing and your daughter’s knocked up” rings a bell. Residents need to keep fighting! Iowa will be the playground of the top 1% of hunters if we let it happen. No doubt!

Looks like some good dudes at ISC and other organizations and plenty of good residents spoke up to get this shot down! Well done!
