High and Back

Had a buddy just call me from the stand. He shot a buck he says too far back and a little high. He saw the deer run through the picked corn field a couple hundred yards. What is the chance that deer will die today sometime? Is there anything he could have hit high and back?

The liver or a gut shot. Either way be best to back out and wait until at least later this afternoon to look for it. What did the arrow look like? Blood, stomach matter ect.

did not pass through, he called again, and has good blood, but he's going to wait until this afternoon to go lookin

Mark last blood and get out of there. Good luck.

How high and how far back. I shot my second P&Y high and back with about 10 inches of arrow stuck in. The lack of pass through may be a blessing as the broadhead movement in the cavity will do a lot of damage with any movement by the buck. My buck was hit in front of the hind quarter and below the spine. Broadhead movement cut the femoral artery and we recovered the buck within eight hours. Give it plenty of time to bed down and try to look for the path of least resistance. My buck eventually went to water and died crossing a stream. And by the way, that buck (shown below) was shot on Halloween 2002. Good luck, I bet you get him later this afternoon.

Back out and look for him tomorrow, no rain in the forecast and cold temps will keep the buck down and the meat will be fine if you find it tomorrow. If he is dead now he will be dead then too.

Overnight, I hit one 2 years ago with a similar outcome, lots of blood and a huge pool where he stopped at 50 yards but I knew the shot wasn't ideal. I gave it until 3:00 thinking it was enough time and ended up jumping the buck but he was in bad shape. Watched where he ran to and bedded back down and backed out until the next morning about 10:00. Found him dead then, with the knowledge I gained however, I won't chase one with a hit like that until the next day ever again especially if the weather is like it is this week.

Yeah he found him this morning. Problem is, he was walking through field, with not a care in the world...arrow still stickin out of him! What are the chances that deer will survive?

Where was the arrow sticking out of him? Did you just watch him and did he bed down some where, so you might be able to do a spot and stalk for a fatal shot?
