Hit one, could use an opinion or two.

Wow what an up and down and up night. 2 o'clock brought in a beast of 9 pointer (probly a 160 inch) with the growler, down the fence; all I could hear was him trotting. He flew through my shooting lane before I could stop him..finally stopped him at 25 yards in what I thought was an opening...shot.....WHACK! Deer runs aways stops, looks back, walks into the timber.... I scan the area for awhile until I see my arrow center punched in a hanging limb about 10 feet of the ground... So much for that guy. Story of my year so far.
Anyways, I had made up my mind that I have let one too many decent buck pass this year and the next decent buck that comes by I am gonna hammer. Well, I keep seeing deer, and as luck would have it another decent buck was coming up the fenceline just as the big 9 had (but not so fast). I stop him broadside 20 yards...shoot...it hits what I think is right behind the shoulder. Well, he lunges and turns around and I thought I saw the arrow get kicked out of his side. It wasn't a pass through and I'm worrying about how good of penetration there was. He ran north and I could see blood coming from his right side but it was the opposite side from me so I can't see exactly where. I lose sight of him only to pick up sight after he crossed the fence and is going across about a 75 acre switchgrass field. He was carrying his right leg and struggling but he never did go down in sight, which was a good 130 yards at least. I climbed down and looked for blood at the hit and couldn't find a speck! I know he was hit but I must be missing the blood somewhere... and I can't find my arrow for anything. I looked for a good 40 minutes before dark and can't find the darn thing. I figure with him going into the switchgrass field like he did, I am just going to wait till morning to try and look. He might be coyote food, but I figure that is better than doing something stupid on him. Worst case scenario I think; is if I hit the front shoulder without any vital penetration... but I really think it got in behind it. Anyone had a hit like this before? Is it possible for a shot to sneak right behind the shoulder and not catch vitals? What are my odds? haha

Sounds to me like your just simply missing the blood.

I would try to find where he crossed the fence to start the trailing. I would wait till mid morning, maybe even hunt that same stand in the morning then get down and start the trailing when you get tired of sitting.

Good luck.

another thing you might want to do is take a buddy or two with you and get in your stand and have your buddy go where you think the last time you saw the deer standing at was and rethink everything from the nite before.

Well, I lost my first buck ever today. We looked for a good 3 hours, and it appears it must've just snuck in the front leg and he didn't die. I've never shot a buck and not found him it is really gettting under my skin. My season has been great. I've had a couple very very close encounters with a couple giants, but couldn't close the deal, and passed up 7 other bucks at or above 135 inches. It just bugs me that when I finally decide to let it rip on one, I can't get it done. The shot was maybe 2 inches from being a heart shot and he lived. I'm feelin pretty low at the moment, but I know I gotta move on. Hopefully he recovers.
