HOHO Help Ozzie Help Others

HOHO is the answers for NE Iowa hunters that are currently without the HUSH program.

HOHO encourages hunters to donate deer through participating lockers who will be paid $50.00 to process each carcass into frozen packages of pure ground venison that will be given to the needy.

The DNR is issuing about 30,000 additional doe hunting permits in the 2003-2004 season, but many hunters only want to shoot one or two deer a year. Those hunters do not want to face the costs of processing and storing venison, plus the concern about being able to consume all of it. HOHO gives the opportunity to shoot more deer, and then donate it through a participating locker. After processing, Northeast Iowa Community Action Family Service Offices will distribute it. Hunters do not have to pay for processing, just their licenses. Any deer, any sex from any season can be donated to HOHO. Hunters can donate as many deer as they can legally shoot.

Ozzie's Outdoors, Northeast Iowa Community Action (NEICAC) and KVIK Radio have teamed together to launch this program in Northeast Iowa. Following the lead of HUSH (Help Us Stop Hunger) in central Iowa, lockers in Northeast Iowa will be asked to participate in this program. Local groups, business and organizations as well as private individuals will be asked to donate the funds needed to pay the lockers for the processing fee. There will be no fees to distribute the meat.

The goal of HOHO for the 2003-2004 season is to provide processing for 100 deer in NE Iowa. NEICAC Family Service Offices in Winneshiek, Allamakee, Howard, Fayette, Clayton and Chickasaw counties will distribute the meat through area food pantries.

Vouchers, which will enable the hunter to take the deer to a designated locker, will be available at Ozzies Outdoor's, Hwy 9, Decorah, Iowa, 563-382-1211.

For more information on the program, or to donate money for the processing, call Ozzie’s Outdoors, 563-382-1211 or LeAnn at NEICAC, Decorah, IA 563-382-8436 Ext. 150. All donations are tax deductible.
