Holding It

I know this is a bit of a silly question, but I have heard many thoughts on this. What do you do if you have to urinate when you are sitting up in your tree stand? I have heard some say that they take in a bottle with them to "fill up" when they have to go so they don't ruin thier hunt by smelling up the place. I have also heard that it really doesn't matter to the deer and they won't be affected - some just go right out of the stand on the ground and say they have had deer pass by with no notice. I know there are guys on this site who have spent a lot of time in stands - could you give me your thoughts? Thannks

I let it fly, it's only ammonia, deer can't tell the difference. If they're smelling anything when downwind, they're smelling the human odor of your body. I used to empty out on a fenceline many years ago until I walked out and saw a really nice buck working my pee spot, making a scrape. The next day I freshened up a few scrapes, then brushed leaves over them, the day after each scrape was reopened. After those few days I don't hold back when an emergency hits me, though I do try and go before I hit the stand.

I've had 2 small bucks come right under me to get a whiff of my pee on the ground and they just walked off as casual as can be. I think it makes a pretty good curiosity scent...and it's cheap!

Never been a problem I let it fly. From the the stand I have watched bucks work scrapes I have just "freshened" on the way to the stand.

I try to hold it or go before Im in my stand. Mainly becuase its too much work for me to get through 4 layers and keep movement to a min.

I do agree with everyone so far. Human urine hasnt ever bothered a deer I have seen. Three years I watch a friend 65 yards down this fence line standup turn away piss out of his stand he didnt see the doe walk out behind him while he was tending business. He got all his zippers zipped and turned back just to see her walking towards his tree. She walked to his spot and started sniffing it and turned to walk away casually and he thumped her through the back and out the bottom.

When I check my trailcams over scrapes, I go right on the scrape. Doesn't seem to have any negative effect, I think its more positive.

I hear a lot of people saying this doesn't bother deer..and I agree. But let me throw this out there. Doe in heat urine doesn't scare deer either..but it's been said time and time again not to put it under your stand. When I am hunting from dark to dark I will not take a leak from the stand. It may not bother a deer but after enough of the smell is on the ground it, attention could be drawn. If that 1 monster walked under your stand and busted you because he caught your movement when smelling the branch over his head..you wouldn't be doing it again. It's not the fact that it scares deer or not, to me its the attention that COULD be drawn me. Me being in a stand is unnatural enough without having a bunch of urine under me. Just my 2 cents.

I was in stand this week close to one of my cams....decided it was slow for 30 mintes, jumped out, pulled the card from the cam peed in the scrape and jumped back in stand. within the hour, 2 bucks came to the scrape and pawed out all the stuff I left for them...and video taped it to boot. never showed any alarm whatsoever...I do agree with you tho duckaholic...

This year I have started taking a leak out of my stand and have seen just as many deer if not more than in past years. I had four does walk right under my stand were I urinated and none of them were alarmed....... until I stuck the biggest one with a 100 grain muzzy.
