Home made Osage longbow

A very large, and finally public, thank you to Matched Set for taking the time to coach me through making my very first "self bow" this weekend. Thank God the weather was crappy because otherwise I'd have felt bad keeping him from shed hunting on Saturday! Tomorrow I go test it and see if the rest is in the right spot, then it gets glued on followed by some polyurethane. If all goes well the leather wrap will be put on and she'll be set for some practice and this fall the does will drop! Thanks again Joe! I still haven't figured out what to name her, maybe Sunshine since the osage wood is such a bright yellow?

I know, I helped strip the bark off the chunk of wood that your bow is going to be made out of, so if something goes wrong you know who to blame.

I think those are Shovelbuck specials, I'm borrowing them for the sighting in process.

Now that's put'n some soul in your equipement.

Beens you helped at the process I want to make sure you get your old signature on it at the Gathering.
Lucky you, you get to learn one of the lost arts and awesome workmanship

Yeah, I know it'll darken, saw some osage from 1948 this weekend, looked like chocolate.

Shovel, does or bucks, whatever is 10 yards and under. For everything else the Guardian will be sitting above me, I'm not quite ready to take off the training wheels.

Yeah, I was wondering also about the specs.
That must be some special osage that Joe grows.

Aint none around here that straight.

66 inches long and about 55lbs.It was a real nice stave to teach with.pretty straight.Jay I got this stave from a friend that has about 400. I hand picked this one.Hey bonker I have walked thru the woods and looked at bunch of trees and only a small handful will make good self bows. on the other hand you can use 40 inch pieces and splice them in the center.takes alot more time.Steam has made more than one stave stove pipe straight.

Sweet.

Where do you guys find "Hedge" straight enough to make a bow?

Bring a saw and your walk'n shoes cause I can find you some, sad thing is I just cut down 2 for my neighbor that were 10' long and 8-10"s in diameter to make a custom sign poles for his cattle sign.

Can't wait to see some harvest pics with it!

Let'n the air out of a doe with that longbow, you'll be as pumped as shoot'n a good buck any other weapon. Let me know if I'm right.

Looks awesome Muddy! As a hobby woodworker that is something I would like to make someday. Nothing like shooting a bow made with your own hands.

Looks awesome.

How long is the process in making one of those pieces of art? And can they dry out and crack?
