How Dry is it?

Just returned from my land down near Ottumwa. Have received roughly an inch of rain in the past 6 wks, on my land. Never thought south east IA could get so dry. Coarse not been in Iowa that long. On the other hand,, areas from DesMoines North to storm lake have standing water in fields ,especially around the Boone area, the other place I reside. Rained all day Friday.! Have given up hope of hauling pails of water to young trees, and planted food plots are dust. Forecast for the Week? Rain chances to the south down in MO, and to the north up in Wis.

Had an inch here in sw iowa that saved the pastures for awhile . Takes a long time to dry out but sure can turn to mud fast.

An inch would be great...we've only had 4 or 5 tenths in the past six weeks in the north corner of davis county. It is drier than I can ever remember. Crops are stunted, no second cuttin for hay. Its bad, but if you go 5 miles north or 3 miles south they have had some real soakers. Luck I guess.

Southeast Iowa foodplot is dryer than skin in the winter. Chikory is drying up and dying. Peas are going flat. The only thing thats doing any good is the beans but even still they are getting a little wilted. Corn is down, I dont care what anyone says someone kicked it all down its laying in a million different positions an broke off at a million different places. No corn is layed down in the area our corn is.HMMM

Sad to say, looks like another dry week. Active Westerlies, still north near Canada,,"Ring Of Fire", that traved the edge of the heat, now West and South of Iowa, down thru MO,,,may catch edge of SW Iowa. I travel between two places,,left the dust and cracks, now up here where everything is lush and green near DesMoines.

We got anywhere from 3 to 6.5 inches in Mercer County a few days ago....not sure if you got any from that storm.

Where is Mercer co? From radar I assume you are anywhere from Lamoni on up I-35 to Ames and on up to Storm lake. Crazy thing was the rain developed two days in a row in this area and just sat there all day not moving east. There are storms crossing west Iowa now south of I-80 as of Sat nite .moving east twards Ottumwa and Fairfield, Boomfield, hope they hold together. Problem is,,as night wares on storms tend to discipate with the daytime heating. It is still a long way from Lamoni to Ottumwa. Crossing our fingers over there.

Just got 1+ inch in Monona county.Just clipped the clover and been putting the brassicas and radishes in. Hopefully the rain keeps coming with the cooler temps, may be a good growing fall afterall. Although 10 miles in any direction is still very dry.

Its been pretty dry down around my grandpas farm. I don't think I have ever seen the creek that low. two months ago it was out of its banks and I had never in my life seen that before.

On a side note, if you are living in Boone you shouldn't have to drive to Ottumwa to hunt!!

Friend of mine dug a post hole in his backyard in Fairfield....27" deep and said it was powder dry the whole way. Fields with poor organic matter are in tough shape while others still have good subsoil moisture with plenty of OM to hold it.

I think we are going to get wet tonight...:way:

Its just below Wayne and Decatur County IA on the MO side.

Yea that is near the i-35 corridor, that whole area had the rain just sit there this week. As far as livng in Boone, My wife and I stay with her ill mother part of the time, but I have property near Ottumwa, with a cabin. we stay in Madrid, a small city near Boone. Stiff competition for hunting up here.

We received about a 1/2" as did most of southern Iowa, few pockets less and many areas ended up with 3/4 to an inch +.

This link is a good source to find out how much rain you received when you don't live at your farm.

You can punch in your zip code and zoom to your area for more accurate and specific rainfall amounts...:way:

I planted turnips down at my place by East of Unionville, Iowa yesterday, so hoping they got rain last night.
Cracks are 1" wide.

Planted my Brassicas and GHR last Sunday and have not had any rain on them yet. Plot was just bare dust yet today when I checked it. At least all of my other plots look great, the clay holds the moisture pretty good.
