How many acres of Corn?

How many acres of corn do you need to plant to have anything left of it for fall deer feeding? I read the amount somewhere, but forgot. Much Appreciated.

Depends on the deer numbers and amount of other feed sources.

If you can offer those figures up someone else may be able to better answer your question.

I agree and that varies widely!

There are some folks that planted an acre and then harvest the leftovers the following spring.

I always planted 6 acres at a cost (then) of $120-150 an acre only to have it be completely stripped bare by Oct first. Sometimes they have eaten the corn itself and destroyed it by mid July!

I would say most others fall somewhere between those two examples. You can find more information on corn and soybeans in this thread:

RR corn and soybeans

Once deer get used to feeding in a food plot in a safe area they will continue to do so and in time those numbers will multiply especially if crop fields are some distance away.

This means that perhaps a few acres might work next year but in a few years it might end up decimated like mine.

I suspect that most people in high deer density areas near good cover in southern Iowa would need 5-10 acres of corn based on my own situation.

Corn is and always will be my favorite but it has become very exspensive to plant and if they kill it before hunting season even starts...what's the point? /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif
