How to stop a Buck.

I have this question, for all you Gentlemen, and Lady, Hunters. I know your yrs of experience will help me. I have not hunted much during rut. The state I came from blasted rifles thru the rut. But I figure it will come up here in IA. You see it all the time on hunting shows. A buck is moving by and the hunter, grunts at it to stop it. Some use a call, some make a grunt by mouth. A few even whistle. How do you do it? Which is better? Many times in videos, the deer locks right on the sound and hunter so I guess you better be ready to shoot. Thanks to everyone for your helpful tips to me in the past.

I bleet! BAAAAAAAAA

Yes, come to full draw then burrrrp (grunt with your mouth)loud enought for him to hear it. Entrance wound exit wound end of story.

I'm a whistler. Quick and low. Louder if the first doesn't stop him.

I might try DOR's sheep call this year

If the buck is calm and stopped or with a slow slow walk....I will take the shot without making a grunt. If he is fast paced/walking from point A to Point B....a soft doe bleat will usually cause them to slow down or pause long enough for a shot.

Like Shredder said, don't alert them if you don't have to. I have successfully stopped several bucks with a soft, mouth only "baaa". But one time the buck was moving fast and the leaves were super dry and he couldn't hear me so I ended up yelling "hey". He stopped, but was pretty alert and I let the arrow fly and he ducked, but not fast enough!

I like Muddy's answer best.
As some have already said, try to get your shot without making an alert sound. I've seen too many people try to stop a deer with a mouth sound, deer doesn't stop, so they try again. This starts to send 99% of hunters into the panic zone if the deer doesn't hear or respond the first time. Then a panicked, fumbled shot leaves you with a year to lament over your missed shot.
"It's a lot easier to knock someone over the head if they never knew you were there, but a great deal more difficult if they heard someone sneak in their house."

Diddo no no sound at all, unless you have one of those fast paced rut walkers @ 20 or more yards. Then I'll bawl or grunt. The thing with alerting them close in is often they look up and spot ya in the tree. Thats not good even if you are @ full draw.

If he's alone - don't. Trailing a doe during the rut - do what you can to get his attention for a split second, that is all it takes. I have seen too many bucks during the rut that you just don't see any other time and I know that i will not let him go by without a few attempts to get him stop. Sometimes it works, sometimes not - but I atleast know that I tried. If he ignores me, then no harm no foul. If he responds, I have just given myself a chance at harvesting a shooter buck that would not have happened otherwise.

I give em the ole KI KI, or just yell at em. It doesn't really matter what you do. I would rather say hey at a buck then I would grunt at it. I've never seen one run from saying Hey at it, but I have watched Pigs roll take off running at the sound of a grunt before.

Snort or snort wheeze with your mouth, they more than likely will stop, maybe not long but it works as well as anything & is a natural sound.

Proceed with caution, most deer will stop with a whistle or grunt, but if you are dealing with an old buck that has heard it before plan on having him kick on the afterburners. The 221 1/8 buck in the following picture could have possibly been mine had I been able to stop him. I gave him the bleat and he went from a walk to a dead sprint. I wasn't that loud either. This buck was finally harvested by my good friend last year, so at least someone got him. I think the pictures were posted before also, so sorry for the repeat.

only the bird dogs..lol

first off when the old rutting BUCK comes a truckin through, you mostly have about enough time to hook your release up, I ain't putting nothing in my mouth while rushing to get my bow drawn, I be yelling at that buck as soon as I get sighted in HEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!He will stop, never had one not,,and about that time he'll be doing a mule kick and I don't care iffing he knows I was their or not...He be blooding like stuck pig......

and I never have cared if all the other deer around looked right at me, I done seen the one I been waiting for, and he was a moving from doe butt to doe butt with no stopping on his mind till his nose said so,,,I had to yell three times on a couple differnent bucks to get them to stop...louder each time
HHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!

I love the RUT
