On the DNR site there is a list of available classes and I think you have to sign up online for all of them. You can do an online version which requires a field day our you cam do a traditional ten hour class. We do two per year in Anamosa with a three hour class Thursday night and them eight hours on Saturday. Some have live fire, some don't.

some kids can take it in school, dont know which schools do or dont, or how you could find out, but have heard of some doing it. my nephews both took it at there schools.
