Hunting in the extreme cold

So I went out hunting Thursday night. -11F. I stayed warm no problem, however my glasses got frosted over and I couldn't see. Took them off, but that was pretty much useless. Had to use the scope on my gun to check for movement. Now is when I really wish I had gotten lasik or contacts. On my way back out of the woods I caught a thorn in the eye. Ouch.

The deer were all bed down in a sheltered valley that runs along with the creek, digging for pods from locust trees. Looks like they are saying pretty close to this area.

I plan on going out again Tonight. If I can figure out a way to keep my glasses clear.

I've heard of people cleaning their glasses with rubbing alcohol really good before they go out, and said that keeps them from frosting up as bad.

There seems to be a magical (cold) temp that the deer burn less calories staying put or feeding less or closer to the beds than feeding alot or more often. I think we've passed that magic temp.

Yup, but I bet they will be anxious to move tonight and tomorrow morning if the temps come up like they forecast (and the wind isn't howling).

They need to come up with a pair of glasses that have a small battery powered heating strip in them to keep them warm, and thus not fog up. I can't believe they haven't designed glasses, or at least a scope with that technology.

I was up north of Saskatoon a couple weeks ago, hunting for a week. Temps ranged from -8 to -40 without the windchill. There was a frost that would build up pretty quick on my hunting equipment & clothes, from the condensation of my breath & exposed skin. I don't wear glasses but the binoc's and scope fogged over pretty quick when I used them. I tried scope dope but I can't say it really helped at all....just had to keep cleaning them with my gloves to just get a somewhat viewable picture.

maybe run a small heating element along the earpiece, and around each lens, similar to the elements on your car's rear window defrost?

if you wipe your bathroom mirror down with shaving cream, the film left is supposed to keep it from fogging up from the steam in the shower. maybe that would help with the glasses?

I use carnauba car wax on my car windows (inside and out) and bathroom mirror, that works pretty good for me. Might give that a try.

i thought everything was closed, am i missing a late season?I i thought the 10th was it.for muzzy, everything.

They actually make a anti fog spray in a small squirt bottle. Just ask where you bought your glasses. Be careful most glasses are plastic with a coating .

The rubbing alchol didn't work, however I experimented with a new breathing technique, exhaling through pursed lips to the side of my face, worked like a charm. Of course its warmed up now, and I tagged out Sunday, so I have until next season to invent those heated glasses.

As for the Shaving Cream, that brings back memories of my Army days. After we waxed a floor we would use shaving creme to put that extra little mirror finish on it. Maybe Musky Hunter knows about that trick too...

That and a couple of others. I went the "off post housing" route, even as a single E-4 overseas. Today you don't even shine your boots or iron your uniform anymore! I like swade! and the new ACU's really are comfortable.
