hunting wisconsin

got a call from my buddy last night, he's a big time cattle rancher and has worked all over the united states on big cattle farms. He now lives in Wisconsin. And invited us up there in October. Does anyone know if yuo can buy non resident deer tags over the counter there or if it's draw huntin only? He has 1100 acres there to hunt. he told us he has geese and bear all over around were he lives. I know wisconsin can produce some good deer but have never had the chance to go out there until now. Hopefully i can buy a tag over the counter and be sittin in a tree in october. If any of yaw could help it would be appreciated, Thanks fellas

If he has alot of Geese and Bears as he mentioned, he is probably in the Northern part of the state. The hunting up there is different from the areas you see on TV. Could still be good, but probably a bit harder.

Forget the deer, kill some of those Honkers :way: Also the woodcock and grouse hunting up there can be spectacular that time of year.

im from northern Wis and yes you can buy over the counter, there are nice bucks up here but be prepared to work for them, i wouldn't trade Iowa hunting for Wis any day and ive killed most of my deer here in wis.

In Northern WI = bear country I'm not sure I would bother deer hunting coming from Iowa. You will likely be disappointed

Counter or online

Being from Minn I bought over the counter for a couple of years but just go on line now.
Bears are as far south of Chippawa Falls so check with your friend as to where because there are areas difficult to hunt up in Northern Wisconsin.
Check regs too about the area you might be hunting.

I would go life is short and it is not always about killing something. Time spent with friends and spending time in a different terrain is worth more to me then worrying about the size of antlers

Depends where in Wis. you go... But most of the northern parts you will have had time killing something nice in a week of hunting... And just so you you know you have to apply for the goose tags and i think they have to be in by today...

Have hunted northern Wis. and like has been said it's a lot different, we hunted large tracts of timber, and while there are some good bucks keep in mind they are pine cone fed not corn fed.

I'm from WI. Way up nort Wisconsin is a blast. Very beautiful, and deer camps up there are unlike any hear in Iowa...typically old rustic cabins. If this 1100 acres has wolves and/or recently been in an earn-a-buck zone, the populations are likely to be very low. There's always a chance at a decent buck, but the best areas in Wisconsin seem to be the corn-producing parts of the state (other than the CWD "eradication zone" of So WI).

I'm from western ky so any deer hunting has to be better then what i have lol, it's not goin to cost me anything to stay up there so i might as well try it to say i have and experinece it. All i know is it's 15 hours from western ky and the bear are protected in his area. were mainly goin up there on a goose hunt. they cut silage and he said there is thousands of geese that come in to the fields after they cut silage. I'm jus ready to get to a different state to hunt, I've never hunted in another state besides ky. Hopefully i get drawn in the next couple years to come hunt iowa. Huntin areound here in western, ky has got terriable. People over rate western ky badly about big bucks. yea if u wana pay 20 or 30 thousand for a lease and manage deer then yea it's good but nobody knows how to pass on little young deer and let em grow. Jus makes me mad. sorry just venting a little lol

tags

i have hunted ne wic se wic and the se is better just do your homework and you will be fine and they are right a buck tag is 160 but better check and make sure you dont have to kill a doe first before getting buck tag . You also can get a bow tag 160 and a gun tag for 160 if you wanted to go up early sept to bow hunt

were suppose to go up sometime in Oct. yea like posted above. It's not always about killing something i jus like to be in the outdoors. gives me time to clear my head and get away from everyday life. I say there should be deer on his farm, it's 1100 acres and consist of big crop fields, pasture fields and woods. surely theres atleast 1 or 2 deer on the farm haha nobody hunts the farm either so there isn't any hunting pressure. Do they have a rifle season or is it shotgun and muzzleloader like iowa and illinois?

And another question, I found out today that my boss owns a 800 acre farm in Missouri and gave me permission to go duck and goose hunt it. do you have to be drawn for a tag there or can you buy them over the counter? and is it shotgun only or rifle to? sorry for all the questions guys. I believe he owns a farm in Illinois as well. and he doesn't even hunt. Now he lives here in western, ky and has another farm here but don't think its very big. Hopefully i get to make the trip to Wis in october and hopefully Missouri in November. Ive always wanted to hunt missouri. Alot of people don't give it the credit it deserves. There are some huge whitetail killed there every year. And you take somewhere like here wer i live in western, ky and it's wayyyy over rated for big deer. Unless you got really deep pockets for a lease and manage the deer for 5 or 6 years. I live in Ohio County and i will bet anything that it's one of the worest places for poaching and spotlighting. We don't have a game warden for our county and people take advantage of that. Our fish and wildlife are to tight to hire more and put money in our WMA's for deer. You go down to peabody and u would think quail was worth a million dollars all the money they put in the land for quail. They use to have a quota hunt only during rifle season for deer, then the last week of season was open to the public. But they done away with that a few years ago. I once talked to a biologist there about why they don't have the 15' antler restriction he told me that it couldn't be done because to many roads into the area. Pisses me off because there is only 2 roads that come to peabody. isn't that a bunch of BS? i told him they should take some of the money from license and tags and everything else to build a small building on the end of each road and make the people that are drawn for the quota hunt check in every morning and check out when ther done hunting. and put the size limit on deer. Jus burns my ass, sorry for the language but it really ticks me off. Because when they did have the quota hunt there was alot more deer period there. I can't bow hunt it almost everyday for the first 2 months of season and be lucky to see 15 deer in 2 months of hunting. And i've been bow hunting there in early season for 11 years and have yet to see a buck that would score over 115. I'll quit rambling on about our sorry KDFW but i could go on and on about it. How is the public land in Iowa? i mean one a normal hunt whats the average number of deer you will see in one sit? and is there alot of people hunting the public land there? I'm interested in hunting SE iowa around van buren co or decatur. Thanks guys sorry for the long story i wrote.
