if bowhunting turkeys was even possible but all the posts on here of bow kills kept my hopes up. I've only hunted spring turkeys for four years, 3 of which were with a bow. I find bowhunting more satisfying than anything. So I've been determined to shoot my first longbeard with a bow.
Well second season I had my chance when two nice toms strutted in. They hung up ten yards behind and to the right of me. Finally one worked out in front of me to 25yds. I put a a good shot on him quartering away. Ten yards later his wings were locked and he was soaring down into the valley. I looked for him the next day with no luck. That hurt but it happens.
Well this Friday A.M. found me with a buddy in a blind on top of the Mississippi River bluffs. Got set up late 5:45 and there were 7 gobblers hammering away down in the valley. With a few sly yelps they were on their way. Not ten minutes later a nice bird let loose 50 yds dead ahead. He spotted the decoys and was on his way.
Three jakes joined the party and they cut the distance to 30 yds. Then the show started. Got to watch him show the jakes whos boss. Once they were out of the picture he closed the distance some more. I ended up shooting him at 20 yds and he jumped and ran into the woods.
We decided to let him be for an hour, meanwhile had two bigger toms come in to investigate. Then the search began. Two hours and 500 yds later I found my bird. Took a half hour to find first blood and it was spotty. Talk about some tough sons of !$%^&es. I wasn't gonna let another one get away.
Sorry for the long post but he deserves it I've never worked so hard in my life for a kill.
20.02 lbs.
9 3/4" beard
7/8" hooks
Another thing to remember. My buddy had to go to work so I had to take the pictures alone. The 20 sec. delay is really about 5 seconds. Just a heads up...
