Interesting history of my 17 pointer

the first day of the bowseason was the first time I saw this buck.
he was south of the blind close to the same spot as he is here from the picture taken 10-8

we usually go out before the season and run the lift up about half way so the deer get used to seeing it up.

well, we didn't do it this year.

he looked at the blind then turned around and trotted away

the next Saturday I hunted the lower blind and by brother in law went to the lift blind.

he had this buck by the blind but in this field he wasn't allowed to shoot bucks.

the next Wed 10-8 I was in the blind and here he comes again.

he came by the blind feeding in the Rye at about 15 yds.

I passed on him because I decided he wasn't big enough and in a few years would be huge.

OK, after a few days of my friends telling me I was crazy, I decided If I get another chance I would take it.

Friday after work Jon took me to the blind. A few hrs later here he comes from the same direction.

He finally gets close enough (15 yds) and turned right for the shot. The only thing was I was all the way to the wall, so I had to lean way forward for the shot. I was using my 48" Elburg mite. I took the shot and heard a loud crack. All the deer around the blind scattered and this buck ran to the woods stopped by a tree and stared at the blind for a few minutes.

I found out because of me leaning way forward my bottom limb tip was about 1/4" above the rim on my wheelchair. That made the bow kick and the arrow I wasnt sure where it went. I knew it took a dive and by looking at the deer standing there staring at the blind new I didn't hit him.

he headed down the hill out of site. that was at sunset

about 10 minutes later a doe came out and stared at the blind for a few minutes before heading west. I am guessing she was one of the does that got the crap scared out of her when the limb hit the chair. she was followed by the 17 pointer.

A few minutes later a 18" 150 class 10 came from the west followed by a 24" 170 class 10. they came over to the blind feeding on the rye. a few minutes later they were followed by the 17 pointer. they stayed by the blind till Jon came to pick me up. He found the arrow where the deer was standing and we noticed a few specks of blood on it. obviously I clipped the 17 pointer, but not bad enough to even phase him.

Saturday evening I had a 125 class 9 and a 3 pointer plus a few does by the blind. after a bit here came 17 point. this time he came from the east. after watching him at 15-20 yds for a few minutes he gave me a shot. This time I had my 46" Rodney Wright Stalker recurve.

I drew and had a 15 yd heart shot. he headed down hill into the woods and I heard the crash. Since I forgot my phone I had to wait till dark for Jon to come pick me up.

The deer went under 100 yds and when Jon came up to the truck to tell me he found the deer he said " I know where you hit the deer the night before"

When the limb hit the chair the arrow was kicked to the left and clipped the main beam and his scalp, thats where the blood came from.

you can see the hit in this picture, right where the nontyp point curls off the main beam.

the rack and cape are at the taxidermy shop right now.

all the circumferences are around 6"
17" inside spread
main beams are 22"+ and 24"+

the g-2's are both 10"

the typ side of the rack was a little over 160"

the nontyp ended up around 180"

That's an amazing deer and amazing story!!! Thanks for sharing that! The pics are super cool as well. After reading this I realized you were in a wheel chair and saw how you rigged the blind, wow!!!!! that's cool you never let that stop you and kill giant bucks like that.

I have a buddy who is paralyzed and you 2 are about as die hard as they come from what it looks like. It's amazing how many big deer he shoots (more than most I know) and how he comes up with creative and sweet ways to hunt. You two obviously find ways to get on the whoppers!

No matter what, congrats, that's a heck of a buck!!!!! What a whopper, and before the rut! I hunt about 5 miles from Douds and your pictures make me wish I could get out more. Thanks for the motivation!

That story just made the last 5 minutes of my life go by in about 2 seconds!! Great story and incredible deer. By the look and sound of it, you've got big bucks growing for years to come as well. Big congrats! Oh and by the way, the traditional equipment was the icing on the cake. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

Great Job way to make your second chance count. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif

great story! That's incredible that you were able to get a second crack at him. Congratulations on a real stud of a buck!

wow is all I can say. congrats on an amazing deer and an amazing story. I can't imagine having the confidence to let an arrow loose at a buck of that caliber with a recurve!!! I would have to do lots and lots of practicing!!

I must say that I am inspired by this story. And you shoot a regular bow? Even more inspiring for me. Congratulations to you my friend. What an amazing story and even better pictures. Thanks for sharing with us!

This is exactly the kind of story that Bowhunter magazine is looking for. If you need help writing it PM me and I'll help you get it done. You really should do it though. A lot of people would enjoy reading the story.

Congrats on a great buck. It sure sounds like you had plenty of options for nice bucks. You nailed it by saying interesting. That buck probably thought a bee or wasp stung his head and didn't even know he'd almost been scalped.

That will be an awesome mount. Congrats again.
