Why was it almost impossible to participate in the past?

Distance from other properties that you had to have permission from. It wasn’t just the landowner you worked with, many times the property you hoped to hunt has many border landowners you needed to get permission from.

Look at the maps listed at the second link, very limited on public ground,

There are some real slammers in city limits but I don’t care to have my tires slashed killing does to earn a buck.

Ames is the same way! I’d love to do it but if you want to hunt outside the parks you have to get permission from every property owner within 200 yards of the piece you want to hunt. Try getting 35 people to say yes in Ames so you can hunt one small piece.

Yikes. So basically impossible to hunt anything other than the city owned ground. I wonder if the city has to get permission from all the surrounding landowners? Doubtful.

Most residents prefer hiring White Buffalo to sharp shoot deer over bait since bow hunters might get enjoyment from killing deer. A dead deer is a dead deer, IMO.

Sharpshooters are very expensive. The Polk county urban bow hunt has been going strong for 26 years. No cost to the entities that participate except for some administrative work and occasionally helping with the aerial survey. We will hit the 10,000 total deer harvested this year. I tried to assist the person setting up the Iowa City hunt - but it was clear Iowa City did not want it to be a success with the parameters we were given. It is too bad as it can be a great program.

Polk County did it right.
