Could be a muley! My Dad and brother and his wife have seen them several times in the past. It's been 5-6 years ago they watched them on some of their ground. Spotted them several times over a two year period.
They live 30 miles East of Sioux City in Little Sioux River valley.
Where was this deer shot in NW Iowa?
flatlander
Haven't heard about it or seen it, but it would not be the first muley shot in NW Iowa. I have seen at least two. They may be some sort of a cross, but the ones I saw had all of the classic muley characterstics - ears, tail, split g1, no brows, etc.
from the picture in the paper, it looked like a true muley. if the occasional elk and cougar can cross a river to get into iowa, it can't be that hard for a mule deer
my dad actually shot 2 bucks a few years ago. They were right up around the farm...we live in mitchell county..no where close to the west side of the state
There have been a few mule deer around over the years I know a guy who shot a mule deer in SE Minnesota (Houston County) 25 years ago. And then it wasn't the only one around. He has the head mount in his house.

Actually, there have been quite afew mulies killed in Minnesota over the years. I live in Clay county and every few years there will be one or two taken. A taxidermist friend of mine hunted one for several years in Norman county during the late 90's. Said it was well over 200 inches. We get a few that show up at the Deer Classic as well. Biggest ever registered was taken near Sleepy Eye in the 70's and scored 194 but I cannot remember if that was typical or non typical.
Mulies in my part of the country are rare but not unheard of.
