We really need to fix our antlerless quotas, if not remove most of them.

I'll look through comments later. In short....
1) ECONOMY has taken a toll on almost all states that folks travel to and hunt. When economy comes back- the applications for deer will sky rocket. Even with poor economy, we have so many more people wanting tags than available. ECONOMY!!!... Look at how many folks apply and go to IL, CO, AK, UT, WY, MT, etc, etc. Economy is the MAJOR driver of a short term drop in any out of state applications right now and out of state travel.
2) No pheasants here OR # worth traveling for.
3) Our high deer tag prices have weeded some folks out. Especially combined with economy. I don't agree with high prices, sort of screams the definition of "price gouging" to me BUT it is what it is. Combine high deer tag prices, longer waits for the "regular" guy & Governor tags creating more demand & promotion- the little guy is kinda getting hosed.

IMO and in reality really, a huge part of this is the decrease in pheasants, Iowa just a few years ago brought in a lot of NR's for pheasants. IMO if the deer herd continues its decline, meaning Branstad negates the proposals again, a similiar effect will be taken with the deer herd and its hunting. I really don't understand why NR's buy up a 100 or so or more acres in Iowa to only have hopes of hunting it, and just because 'it's Iowa' they think they will harvest a large buck. Why not just take all that money from purchaesing that property (at least 100k, gas, food, lodging, tags, etc.) and put all that into a property in their own state. Just because its Iowa does not mean crap. Unless you have like over 640 acres, which is widely accepted as a deers home range, can you truley have a chance of keeping those deer on your property year after year. Why not take that money and time and put it into something more local to you? Something where you could feel to have a much more part of the land and community, and be guarenteed to hunt every year. Perhaps NR should lobby for their state to have regulations more like Iowa, instead of flocking here to hunt create the enviornement, both politically and biologically, where they reside. That to me seems like something that would serve a much greater purpose.

Many NR like myself buy the property as an investment. I have hunted Iowa twice in the 7 years that I have owned a farm. I like to shed hunt, turkey hunt etc...so it is not all about the deer hunt itself.

The first farm I bought was $1000 an acre and it had 125 acres of rough tillable land on it, so it was overlooked by local farmers but it paid a nice cash rent check so it would cash flow.

Sorry, I was just trying to better myself for retirement. I'm self employed with no pension, and I need assets that will pay me when I retire, in the form of cash rent, CRP or timber harvest. Iowa offered that, more so than any other state.

I've since sold a couple farms and upgraded to the one that I want, and I am very happy with it. It is probably the best investment that I have ever made, and it sure beats bank CD's!!

Really a guy can hunt it every year, I just have chose not to.

There are several NR landowners that have bought a farm and they have now moved to Iowa. Maybe I will do that someday, who knows?
