Iowa November Gun Season !

Cornfed

Hey Guys & Gals,

I apologize if this has already been kicked around here (I have been out of the forum for a while).... but is everyone aware that Iowa recently passed a 3 day statewide antlerless gun season the Friday - Sunday after Thanksgiving. Talk about messing things up for the 1st season shotgun hunters.... not to mention those who like to bowhunt the late November rut. I could not believe it when a friend mentioned it to me. I just logged on to the DNR website and read the article for myself under recent news. It also mentions a centerfire gun season in January for southern Iowa....

What does everyone think of this????

Man I hate to see that happen in your neck of the woods. It could lead to more & more liberal seasons with rifles. Don't let it happen, Iowa could turn into another Pa. I already have to deal with a week of muzzle loader & three days of rifle around the 3rd week of October, talk about ruining an archery season. After that all the deer are pretty nocturnal for the rut & the mature deer just don't show themselves. Fight it if you can!!!

The natural resources commission has not voted on it yet. Call and write your representatives and those on the commission. Tell them what you think about it!

The whole thing is nothing but political. I’ll just say that I am extremely disappointed with the DNR’s lack of a back bone on this whole issue. It makes me sick.

From what I have been able to gather.... it is a done deal!!! We will definately have shotgun hunters driving the woods for antlerless deer statewide the 3 days following Thanksgiving..... it will certainly make for a big change for most of us who have enjoyed bowhunting this time of year as well as change the outcome of the early shotgun season. Maybe most are sleeping on this one, but I am surprised more haven't commented on this issue.

Cornfed - do a search on this topic and you will find several posts on it. FYI it is not officially a done deal yet. It still needs to be implemented by the Legislative Rules Committee.

I can only imagine what it will be like during those 3 days. Traditionally, there is a lot of pheasant hunting that goes on that weekend. Couple that with deer huntin' and it will be crowded.

I have seen alot of big bucks on that opening weekend of pheasant season. They seem to get pushed out of the C.R.P and fence rows by the pheasant hunters. In my area its a good time to be in your stand, but it doesn't hurt to hang some orange around you somewhere.

Although I have given my opinion on being against any gun hunting in November, this may not be such a bad thing for me personally when looking at it from a selfish point of view.

The neighboring properties will get some gun action the weekend before 1st gun season while my place will remain a quiet resting place. If I am still bow hunting or just scouting prior to the first season gun opener it is going to push deer in my direction. Not bad...

The mature bucks that are sometimes taken on the gun opener are going to get a "wake up" call this year.

Obviously, I would have a different point of view if I were trying to fill my bow tag on public ground that weekend.

I posted this a month ago- same idea. There will be many more mature bucks waking up early.

an early anterless gun season- right before the regular gun season would educate a lot of bucks. Survival rate for the first season shotgun bucks would likely increase with that education.

I may have misunderstood, but I thought that 3 day gun season only going to be those counties where not all the antlerless bow tags were sold out? Am I mistaken on this?

No your right - but they are a lot of counties that have increased tag quotas this year! And a lot that never sell out!
