Iowa sportsman’s club tournament

Don’t believe they do sportsmen any favors?
Turkeys, pheasants, quail, ducks , geese… all benefit so the sportsmen that hunt them benefit.
Not to mention the damage getting blamed on deer, thus affecting deer hunters.
What did you sell your coons for this year on average? And how many did you sell? Since it’s such a valuable resource I can bring you all of mine this fall.
I sold my coons for a $7 average. And I had 20 ish of them. Didn’t trap as much this fall due to family responsibilities.

But feel free to come by and I’ll take your coons. I’m not opposed to free money….maybe I’m a democrat???? lol

Coons are averaging over $9 on carcass recently.

I personally have taken a landowner from here up on trapping before and I was given a map of where I could trap. I’m telling you now, I tried it and it wasn’t worth my time. Had I been able to trap unrestricted I’d of been back.

Also how many of the landowners are going to let guys trap in November when fur is prime. Not many because they cry it ruins their deer hunting. And now you see why people aren’t trapping.

I’m not against these tournaments when they’re done at a time that the fur can be utilized but to cry about deer regulations being so bad all the time and then ignore regulations about wanton waste is laughable.

Want to save turkey nest shoot more deer, new study shows deer stomping turkey nests and eating the eggs.

Your new study is about as laughable as possums eating ticks, most places the hides are probably still good unless theres been some real warm spells and you can just sell skulls also

I’m guessing it was a joke.

Most coon pelts start going downhill when they start breeding in January and just get worse from there.

You’re not gonna find many good coons this time of year let alone the end of the month. Gonna be rubbed down ugly hides.

That new study was obviously sarcasm. But hey things are said on here all the time that aren’t truthful to support an agenda.

That being said I’d love to see all you guys saying coons need to be harvested (as they should be) trapping this fall instead of deer hunting since it’s such a huge deal. Hell it’d kill two birds with one stone, less pressure on the oh so delicate whitetail deer while putting a hurt on coons that you can actually sell and use.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

Turns out after a quick google search deer do have a negative impact on wild turkey nests and do consume eggs and poults in areas with calcium deficiency or high densities.

There was a study in Florida showing deer preying on quail nests. Out of 13 nests studied 9 were destroyed and eaten by deer.

Also the ongoing DNR turkey study has shown nest predation hasn’t really changed over the last 5 years even with the boom in nest predator populations.

If there’s some “truth or agreement in the middle” it’s this…. Anyone that wants to trap has more opportunities now than anytime I’ve ever seen in my 30-some years outdoors. Trappers are welcome at about any farm I know. There’s more farms that want trappers than there is trappers. Almost all of fur bearing animals are overpopulated or at “record levels” across much of the state IMO. There’s room for trappers & there’s a lot of room to bring the population down. Both can be done. If populations dips too low & fur prices explode- I’m sure things like this wouldn’t hardly be going on. The opposite is true - it’s a big problem & this is better, IMO, than paying a bounty on them like SD does. Which - that $500k (other than the abuse of it by idiots who cheat it)…. probably pays for itself in multiples by taking thousands of predators off landscape before nest season & enhancing their massive bird hunting economy. Theres no doubt their pheasant #’s are better than ours for a variety of reasons & I do think that program is a part of it. This is an alternative to asking the public to pay for a bounty & a win/win for everyone in this current environment. I do think more of this will result in a lot better pheasant, turkey & quail #’s where it goes on.
This is another fun tool that raises $ for charity & lowers #’s of overpopulated animals. Getting folks out of the house & having fun- for charity!! Win/win/win/win (coons only losers) Let’s go!!

As a houndsman I'll just piss ya all off and say I hate these events and thermals being used period. For events like this and any other time of the year. For a lot of same reasons stated above and a few more. There I said it, pile on. lol

Season closes at the end of February. I’m a trapper and I hate these contests. The fur isn’t prime so essentially worthless, just killing to kill and dumping them in a landfill. Great fuel for the antis.
I understand your points!! Could be fun tho!! ;). We’re just trying to whack some predators for a good cause!!

Totally understand your points!! Unfortunate we even gotta worry about the anti’s opinions! Crazy! They hate fur but love slave labor creating synthetics from third world countries. Screwed up system we live in

It’s interesting how when we truly flush out every topic- there’s not 2 people that agree on every single issue. (If need any proof- are you married?!? ;) ). Everyone is a hybrid of independent thinking, perspectives & issues. Some on here are against this but also big supporters of thermals. Or for this and against thermals. Or any combo of infinite issues. & while all of us have differing opinions on xyz- I do know we all want what’s best for the resource & future.
There’s some issues that I do think the vast majority are for or against. Like adding crossbows to archery- hill to die on. On this one- even if I was making my living off furs & didn’t like this- I probably could understand the population issues, a cause for charity & admit there’s not enough trapping going on. I also respect the pov that doesn’t like this. Obviously, IMHO- a super minor thing - don’t like it- don’t do it. I personally love it but I respect the other POV’s. FWIW- on my home farm- if I tried to be in the contest there- I would finish dead last as the “Racoon” (Procyon lotor) is now listed as EXTINCT in my section. ;) :)

The biggest shame of all is the fur market just being ruined, the lefty’s finally got what they wanted (or so they think) and what they didn’t account for was that all of these animals were still going to get shot or trapped whether there was a fur market or not. But it’s not their problem because they’re 500 miles away from it.

Tough subject! Thermals are great for predator control BUT at the same time people way more influential and smarter than me determined that type of tech shouldn’t be legal during any deer season.. I totally support whacking predators as much as possible but do see issues with allowing such tech while trying to combat serious poaching issues.. tough subject. I get the whole poachers will poach no matter what arguement. You can literally apply that to just about any hunting reg ever created but yet we still have regs that the majority follow., I sure don’t have the answers yet but am optimistic most of us are still working to do the best for the hunters in the state and our resources. If that continues to be the goal we all win.
