I arrowed a doe this year.. and it penetrated deep... but not all the way through... she ran about 20 yds.. stopped and i saw her head go down by where she was shot... and was there for about 45 sec... but remember it penetrated deep.. she ran about 6 yds. down the creek and i found the arrow covered in blood.. but i am still confused as to how the arrow came out like thats.. when she paused for that 45 sec.. could she have been trying to pull the arrow out of her side?? becuz there is nooo possible way it could have fell out that easy! ive just been thinkin about it lately... but ive never figured out how it came out so easy!? ive never seen a deer try and pull an arrow out.. im just curious to know if the doe could have actually tried to pull it out!? any of you guys/gals know if a deer can or would do this??

I would say it's very possible. We've had cows get tree branches jammed in their shoulder and they try and pull them out. Don't know why a deer would be any different.

Were you using expandables? Lotsa times those broadheads allow the arrow to back out much easier than a fixed blade.

Simple answer...yes it is possible. I have personally seen deer pull arrows with their mouths.

Obviously, this may happen most often when the shot placement is less than perfect.

The best shots produce kills when the deer isn't aware of an arrow "pass through!"

I too have seen deer try to pull arrows with their mouths, but it has been quite a few years since I last saw that. With todays modern bows and given that I only shoot brand new, razor sharp broadheads I can only think of three times in the past 10 years or so that I didn't have a pass through. One was a shoulder hit on the second arrow in a buck, the other two were spine shots and let's just say that all of those deer didn't really have a chance to do any arrow pulling.

i shot a buck in the brisket several years ago. i was young and didnt make the best shot, the buck ran off and stopped, he grabbed the arrow with his mouth, pulled it out, flung it over his back and gave me the middle hoof.....
he lived only to be killed the following year by my dad. crazy, but not impossible

I made a good shot on a doe this year, about 1/4 of the arrow was sticking out the far side, she went 20 yards, stopped, reached around and pulled the arrow out using her mouth, it took her about 4 swipes to get it all the way out, she dropped the arrow to the ground then she went another 10 yards and tipped over deader than a door nail.

Okay... that pretty much answers my question! and for all you wonderin.. i was using 100 gr. muzzy fix blades... and they have never let me down! but it just really suprised me.. i got her in the shoulder and it didnt go quite all the way through! so she must have stopped and pulled it out becuz the only thing that i could really see stickin out was the fletching... and i was suprised to find that arrow layin down in the creek!

but thanx for answerin my question guys!

Sounds like the muzzy could have also caught on some brush and pulled the rest of the way through as she ran.

but i still honestly have no clue how it would have come out soo easy... its was in about 3/4 the way... and pullin that SOB out would hurt sooo bad.. and where she was standin supposedly pullin it out.. was just a puddle.. no no.. a pond of blood.. its just amazin how a deer can take so much pain pullin an arrow out of its side... if it were me.. my instincts would probably tell me to run like hell!

but i guess im not a deer either! oh well.. at least i got her! haha
