Is it really a law?

What if your weight hits the bottom of the river while you are fishing?

I am sorry I couldn't resist! This is a strange law that I didn't know!

Seems crazy that they could enforce a law that you cant even find or find out if the river is meandering or non.

How about ice? Are you on water if your on ice? Somebody said your jig when fishing. How about decoys?

It one of those things that doesn't mean anything to me but it driving me crazy.

This definition is from the Code of Iowa:
"Navigable stream" means all streams which can support a vessel capable of carrying one or more persons during a total of a six-month period in one out of every ten years.
and
"Meandered stream" means a lake or stream which at the time of the original government survey was so surveyed as to mark, plat and compute acreage of adjacent fractional sections.
dblmainbeam- Let me know what county you are curious about and I will post all meandered, navigable, and trout streams for that county.
Also, as far as snowmobiles:
321G.13 Unlawful operation.
1. A person shall not drive or operate a snowmobile: g. In any park, wildlife area, preserve, refuge, game management area, or any portion of a meandered stream , or any portion of the bed of a nonmeandered stream which has been identified as a navigable stream or river by rule adopted by the department and which is covered by water, except on designated snowmobile trails.
This paragraph does not prohibit the use of ford crossings of public or private roads or any other ford crossing when used for agricultural purposes; the operation of construction vehicles engaged in lawful construction, repair, or maintenance in a streambed; or the operation of snowmobiles on ice.

Hey man- just because I copied and pasted it dosen't mean that I know what the hell it says.

I believe that it says that a meandered stream it a stream that was there when the government first did surveys of the land. Navigable is a stream that basically has enough water to float a boat with a person in it for 6 months out of the year.
I threw in the snowmobile section because there was a question to riding snowmobiles on ice. And I believe that the section said you could. I got the info from the Code of Iowa on the web. I did a search for meandered streams and found a page that lists a meandered and navigable streams by county, but it is in Adobe and I'm not sure how to make a link to it.
