There's a great documentary about Ishi on Netflix for those of you interested. It had been a number of years since I last seen it and really enjoyed watching it again. It's a good history lesson about him and the atrocities that happened to Native Americans. There is also a little bit about Saxton Pope befriending him. Check it out if you can. It's just a little under an hour in length.
