I would just like to officially thank Muddy for jinxing my weekend. I spent Sat. morning driving around the area(10 mile area) to check out bird activity. Saw at least 100 birds, mostly groups of 10-20 hens with 1 or 2 longbeards. I actually got a tom breeding a hen on video. That was cool. I dealt with 30-50 mile an hour winds all day. Needless to say I never heard a single gobble.
Things died down at sunset and I heard one lonely gobble about 300 yards away. So me and my buddy went to try and find those birds and put up the DB. Never could get another gobble out of him so we decided to set up in the only clearing in the vicinity of the bird. As soon as I pulled the blind out of the bag, about a dozen birds flew off the roost about 40 yards away
Its thick timber and we never put eyes on the birds until they were flying away. Went back to the truck and pitched the tent. Went to bed. Woke up at 2am to a freaking hurricane. Wind and rain, more than the tent could handle. That wasn't in the forecast, by the way. I think Muddy was at home performing a raindance or something.
Got up at 5am very tired and a little wet and headed out. Never saw a bird all day, until I was driving home and then of course they were everywhere.
The only good that came out of this weekend was making my friend(the landowner) happy by giving him these that I found Sat. afternoon.
No more trash talking for me for a few days unless I shoot the KS state record tomorrow
