IW 2026 Poll Results

Those coyote hunters aren’t in your area because it’s all deer hunters that don’t want coyote hunters ruining their ruts by calling on their property, even though deer will stand there and look at the callers.

Why aren’t there trappers? Because they aren’t allowed to trap when the fur is prime because it will mess up the deer hunting. Or if they are allowed to trap it’s limited to areas where it’s not worth their time.

We have tons of trappers and coyote callers around here. Those coyote hunters are out more than deer hunters in November. They could care less about deer but they also have unlimited access to ground.

People saying raccoons aren’t worth anything and they are shooting hundreds a night must not like money. Green coons averaged around $7.50 at the Iowa auction this spring. Quick math is 100 coons would be $750 a night. Not hard to skin a raccoon either maybe 5 min tops. You could sell them for around $10 full carcass too because the meat market.
Yep!

We’ve been experimenting a lot with this. Rotisserie is our current favorite since we ate the last of 500 jars of pickled coon.
I prefer a mesquite flavoring or even a light hint of hickory. Tell u what- smoked one on the clippings from our apple orchard pruning….. apple smoked coon…. to die for!!

Geez..., you sure have some skinny/ women looking arms Curtis.;)

Side note: helping in the tannery I’ve been skinning a bunch of bobcats. Looks just like pork, get told it tastes like pork. I’m always tempted to cut out a backstrap and grill it up. Maybe when I get my first I’ll do it, no idea how the others were taken care of to even try it with one of them.

Curtis is 100% correct on the access issue for coyote hunters /trappers. I used to trap/call the neighbors place and did well there. As soon as the neighbors decided they were going to deer hunt more then one weekend a year, I couldn’t get in there until deer season was over.

I see both sides of it, but if I had history (good history) with a guy, I would let them coyote hunt anytime as long as we communicate and don't trip over each other. That is a bummer.

Make November a bird hunting only month. Very unpopular idea I’m sure but it would solve more than one issue. Think of all the mature deer that would make it through the stupid phase. Any reasons against are all going to be the me, me, me argument as some say. There’d be no excuses for having anything but a shotgun and birdshot in the vehicle. It would eliminate any questions/excuses if someone is seen shooting a rifle.

There’s a reason the majority of poaching is done at that time. The big guys are moving more than any other time of year. On top of the fact that they aren’t going to run if a hot doe is laying nearby they are getting pushed by harvest.
Nobody will go for it but it’d sure be neat seeing the results! Would be interesting to have an accurate judge of support for this! Even if half of November was blocked off. Not necessarily supporting anything but it definitely would be interesting! Bowhunters like myself will cry loudly! Does it give a win to the deer tho??

Definitely a win for the deer. We already tout how keeping guns out of the rut has made us great. Imagine no hunting at all during the rut. Be a lot of whining but hard to argue that it wouldn’t be successful. If people were really serious about saving or nurturing bigger deer, why wouldn’t it work. Are there any other animals besides coyote that we hunt during mating season?

Open October for archery, consider it 1 mo of early season and you’re still going to catch a little of the rut. Deer are susceptible to calls, just not quite as ignorant yet.
Shotgun 1&2: 1st & 2nd wkd of Dec only. 2nd season 5 days just like the first
Late Primitive: Blackpowder and archery equipment only.
And shutoff all of the extra antlerless. If producers need depredation tags, issue them.
The archery hunters would still get almost 2mos, the gun guys 5 days. Hard to argue who’s getting shorted.

Leave October for archery if necessary.

Better yet! We’d ALL truly give up something for the sake of “the resource”. I’d support it just for the entertainment purposes of watching and partaking in the arguments!! ;)
I understand what you are saying but I do think 2nd gun needs a little bit of a season length advantage over gun 1 in order to keep hunters split up and to incentivize going Gun 2. The two weekends of gun2 is a major draw for those that go then! Would hate to handicap gun seasons any more and make the cries to change things up even louder (crossbows, centerfires. Etc)

What else?
Can't hunt within 200 yards of the sight and the feed needs to be completely removed ten days prior to hunting. If the officer thinks it altered the normal travel of a deer, you can be fined. This is what a local officer told us several years ago because we though a neighbor was putting out corn during the season.

What I meant in broad terms as hunting over it. I dont beleive the 10 day things is in the regs tho.

Eliminating any in season feeding cleans up the gigantic Grey area and would make it much easier to enforce. Much needed imo.
