Just a fun hypothetical question

Tough question in my mind. The old boy would be an awesome trophy and I know 170 bucks aren't every where, but I think the old boy would be a rarer trophy.
That being said, I can bet if I saw the 170 buck, the antler envy would take over and I would try to put the smack down on him.

A similar thing happend to me a couple of years back. I had a 130ish bruiser 15 yards from my stand. 40 yards away there was a 150 - 160 class beautiful 11pt. They bruiser passed back and forth in front of my stand with his ears down and the 11pt wanted nothing to do with him. The bruiser was twice his age and twice his size. I had multiple chances to put a arrow in the bruiser but i couldn't take my eyes off that 11pt. Finally it was clear the 11pt was not going to come within range so i decided to try and take the bruiser. Well i had waited too long and the bruiser finally busted me and both deer were gone! I would have to say it was still one of the best shows of dominance that i have seen. After all of this i would still probably take the 170! /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

based on my history and how difficult it has been to stay on land, id take the first good shot at either, however, if i had to pick, the 170 without a doubt. no question of ethics in that decision!

I can honestly say that I think I would just sit back and watch the show. We all know that there are valid reasons not to shoot either deer and those reasons are only meaningful to the hunter making the decision at the time. I have never had a deer mounted but have done a couple of antler plaques so the 170 probably would not be much of an attraction for that reason. I have seen a couple of really old bucks over the years and they are truly unique in today's hunting woods. Several years ago my son shot a very old buck during the 1st shotgun season. He was laying in a brush pile and Son literally almost stepped on him before he jumped. The first shot knocked him down but then he got back up and Son shot him twice more. We found latter that that first shot hit the right antler and broke off about half of it. This buck had almost no teeth left, the classic roman nose, and the horns were even grayer than his hide and very brittle. We didn't think he would have ever seen another spring and while maybe not actual trophy status certainly gave a teenage boy some thing to talk about for a few years.
For my own reasons I would let both walk, but certainly respect any one else's reason for taking one or the other. I would want the younger buck to remain in the woods propagating more like him in future generations knowing that life must continue onward. I would want the old one to have what ever and as much time as is left to him, maybe because I am reaching that time in my life and hope that others will allow me that same thing.

Shoot the 170 and hope that the old guys kicks it from a heart attack!

In all serious though, if a 170 gave me a shot, I don't know if I would even notice the 125 standing there!

I hunt non-connecting small parcels and have plenty of help (aka pressure) from the neighboring lands.

My main goal with my bow has always been and will always be to harvest a booner so the in that situation I'm trying to harvest the 170 without a doubt.

Double a would shoot the spike that is watching those two. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Anyone who would pass up a shot at a 170 is out of their mind. How many shots at 170's are you going to have in a lifetime? Come on!

i would have shoot him weeks before and doe tagged him!!!

I'd like to say the old monarch, but it'd probably be the 170. I don't know if I've ever seen a 170 while hunting!

Being an Iowa landowner I would shoot both because hypothetically speaking these deer are on my property and I am allowed two buck tags. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif Really though, a 4 1/2 year old 170" with the right genetics could easily be a 190" to 200" world class deer in another year. That being said I would try my best to make sure he never reached that size. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I have a book which includes a story of a buck that was bow killed, aged at 12 years old. The deer was killed with a rough looking rack, L side broken main beam and overall not very impressive. The bowhunter had multiple sitings and kept close track of this deer through the years. There were no trail cams back then. He had multiple sheds off of the old buck, a couple were B&C class sets and he also had singles from the deer for a number of years.

Since we're dreaming here, killing a deer like that would be mine. No difference to me if his rack went down hill. I'd also have all those sheds mounted on a plaque next to him.

A whole lot of if's in this one for me. If it was my land or area to hunt and I didn't have to worry about other hunters and I had such a history with that one old deer I would probably shoot the old one based on my recent years of hunting experience.

Now if it was an area that had a lot of other pressure I'd smoke that 170 in a heartbeat!
