Kansas Help

My brother and I are looking to come to KS next year on a whitetial hunt. We would likely head over for an archery hunt (1st choice) and may consider a muzzleloader hunt (2nd choice) if the timing was better for our schedules and our deer seasons in IL and IN. For those of you that are from KS we are looking for a little help. We have access to some excellent private ground, so I won't ask where the best places to hunt are. The information that we are trying to find is:

1.) Given the current tag situation (220 left over NR tags in 2008) is it even necessary to apply in the draw or would a tag purchase a few weeks before we plan to head over be ok (I only ask as we could possibly plan our hunt around the projected weather and not get stuck hunting a handful of days in 70+ degree weather if it hits)

2.) If you could pick any consecutive 10 days to hunt in Central KS what days would you pick. I ask because we are trying to work around some of the hunting dates in IL and IN. We are currently looking at either Oct. 30-Nov.8th or Nov. 13-22 as our days to hunt. The later dates would require us to skip the IL 1st shotgun season, which we wouldn't be opposed to if the hunting is generally better during these dates.

If you are hesistant on posting this information in the public forum please feel free to email me or PM me. I would ask the landowner this information but they are not hunters and I know there are alot of knowledgeable whitetail hunters on here from KS that I would rather get this info. from

Thanks in advance for any information that you can provide, it will be greatly appreciated.

Definately put it....just in case.
I would pick the dates in b?w what you have listed.
8-12th have been our hottest dates for truely mature animals.
if those dates are fixed I'd opt for the earlier dates on public ground, but since you are on private i'd go for for the 13th on.

I agree with Dor, you just can't go wrong the first 2.5 weeks in Nov. Pretty much when things are heating up in IA and IL the same is happening here. If there will be pheasant hunting taking place on your ground you might be better off with the first dates. If not, the second dates might be best b/c the weather is GENERALLY more consistent by then. I shot my buck three years ago in Western Kansas on Nov. 5th -- that day the high was in the 80s. /forum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif Good luck!

One more thing, you better apply -- the most popular units don't have many leftover tags.

DOR and KSQ2,

Thanks for the info. I figured that the hunting was generally similar to IA and IL, I just wanted to double check as the really hot days in IL seem to be about 4-5 days later than IA every year. I may pick your brains a bit after we draw as things pop up if you don't mind. Thanks again fellas

Shoot me a pm anytime you want! Kansas has a lot to offer, hopefully it'll remain that way; years of growing an impressive deer herd (speaking of quality, not quantity) could be undone if some legislatures get their way.
