Knife Knut

I have a fledgling knife collection. Most of the knives in it have stories. There is the Marble sheath knife that my great Grandfather gave to my Grandfather who gave it to my Dad who gave it to me. Great Grandad's Mine is the layered leather though it has a metal end instead of the stag handle in the picture. The Marble sheath knife my Grandfather bought followed the same path. Grandpa's knife Mine has a black butt instead of the metal pictured.

Dad came home one day from work with an interesting story about a Case XX 223-6 sheath knife that was given to him. I gathered he got it from a law officer. I could only speculate as to where the officer acquired it. ;

I purchased a Schrade Sharpfinger 152 sheath knife because I liked the design. I was given a second.

I found a broken Buck sheath knife while hunting one day. I sent it in to Buck and they replaced it free of charge (it was a model that was no longer in production, so they subbed in the "replacement" model, 118C).

I have a small Schrade sheath knife that was my favorite knife until I received the following knife as a gift.

The Scrade 770 Muskrat Skinner:

I use this knife start to finish on all deer I shoot. From field dressing to skining to boning out. I like that if one blade seems dull, I just open the other and continue to work.

While researching the Marble knives yesterday, I came across this model:
My next knife purchase.
I think this new knife and I will be good friends.

Bird and trout my left foot! Looks like a deer gutter to me!

So is anybody else crazy about knives?

What knife is by your side/in your pocket?

What is your prefence in knives?

Are you in the "bigger is better" category?

Ceramic?

Or the "Hey, anybody bring a knife" camp?

Mine is an Old Timer in which the words are very nearly worn right off from it.

I think when I was a kid I even carried it to school (as did everybody)...big no-no nowdays.

Seems it just apart of me after all these years......

I am a knife freak as well (and the old man always carried one as well). I lost one of my favorites when I moved to Iowa in 1981....funny thing is I found it 2005 while cleaning out my mothers barn. One of the best blades I have seen is one that is made out of a old piece of farm equipment. I almost gave one of my favorites to Kratz in a pack but he was generous enough to return it.

One of my most prized posessions is the Marbles knife given to me by my grandpa not to long before he passed away.

He was a die-hard hunter and upland guide and dog handler. He used this knife to skin two moose and this fall hopefully I will skin my first bull with it as well. And it has gutted and skinned dozens of deer. I no longer carry it for fear of losing it, although it wll come out of retirement for my Alaskan moose adventure in September. Now I carry the one that I will hopefully hand down to my grandson, a fixed blade Buck Alpha. It is the one I wear on my belt and makes an excellent skinner and caper. It has a total length of just over six inches and a blade of only three inches and never has a problem getting the job done.

I feel like the guys with the bowie knives on their hips at deer camp are kinda like the guys who drive european sports cars, they seem to be compensating for something. Either that or they have not spent very much time in the guts, where a big blade is more of a hinderance.

Great post. I'm certifiably nuts when it comes to knives. I'll get some pics together soon and post them.

I have a few from dad & grandpa. Don't use them much anymore but sure are nice to touch and hold.

I carry a Browning with the 1/2 serrated 1/2 regular blade for about everything. Thought I lost it the other day- turned the truck and car upside down. Well, not so funny but Sunday morning the airport security folks found it for me while x-raying by bag. Lucky I had enough time to run it back to the truck before boarding.

I was able to get some pics of some of my knives this evening. A lot of the older folders were my grandfathers and dads.

These two are favorites. They are both J. Russell & Company knives dating to the 1830's.

The two long ones here are Remingtons.

I've been carrying this Gerber and the homebuilt for 20+ years.

Top is a KaBar, second is a Western, and the last one is a Chicago Cutlery that a drunk held to my neck and threatened to kill me with back in 1975. As you can see, I'm alive and own the knife. He ended up getting run over by my car. Oops

Of course i have to have some Cabelas stuff.

Dang it, Jay. I rounded up some of my knives for a group photo tonight. Then, I see your post. Now I have to go looking for my Grandfather's folders. I recognize quite a few of the pocket knives in that picture.

The bottom Russell reminds me of a Green River Buffalo skinner.

LOL! That's classic. GLAD I don't have any similar stories!

I tried to lay the knives out as to how they were in the original post. I noticed that what I called a Schrade sheath is actually a Case.

I need to look into my tool boxes as I know I have a Green River Buffalo Skinner repro that I made from a kit I purchased from Dixie Gun Works. That won't be the only knife I find!
