Knotty Pine / Man Caves

DarkArcher

Lung Buster
I am looking to redo my basement due to the amount of rain we have be getting and the fact that the sump pump malfunctioned leaving my basement flooded.

Does anyone have any experience with using knotty pine paneling for a basement or man cave? If so do you have a solid source for getting the material and any pointers when using the material?

I hope to turn at least one room in my home into a man-dwelling. I am excited for the change and will be sure to keep you all posted on the progress and outcome of the cave.

Thanks!

dang just missed it

we just ripped all the knotty pine out of my aunts basement and hung drywall.
i could of hooked you up with a truck load of the old stuff. the thick heavy stuff that has an older tarnished look.

but how it was used in her basement was studded walls with roll out insulation then with a brad nailer it was nailed to the studs.

I did my cave in the 5/16" tongue & groove pine that is about 3 3/4" wide 8' long & comes something like 6 in a pack for $8. I used 1 1/2" strips screwed to my concrete walls, put on 1/2" particle board & then the knotty pine boards. I bradded the pine on the tongue side. I used the particle board because it doesn't warp or grow or shrink. And the pine is just for looks anyways, no need to be thick w/ a 1/2" backing. I used the one step stain & varnish. Been 6 years now & have had no problems.....still my favorite place in the house :)

Man sounds like I missed a solid opportunity, I appreciate the offer.

The stuff I am looking at now is 3/4" thick and 6" width, this has been the best deal I can find thus far. Sounds like it is pretty easy to install either to the studs or the rippers. I don't know for sure what is behind the current wood paneling but it looks god awful.

I am gonna go with the pre finished/stained clear coat and put up a vapor barrier on the outside walls. Also hoping to build some sort of stone fassad (sp?) with a 1/2 log mantle to put the TV above. I will keep you guys posted on the progress and appreciate the info.

I am sure the fiance will have a tough time pulling me out of the cave once it is completed.

Here's a shot of mine

Long pieces are a little easier with two people and a rubber mallet and a couple short pieces cut off to set against the good board to tap it into place are helpful....easy to break the tongue off...;)

I bought a Paslode finish nail gun and used 1-1/2" finish nails nailed into the beveled area. It's on two walls and my ceiling and we love it!

Just a clear coat of something I don't even remember what but got it at Sherwin Williams and sprayed it on.

Piece a cake...:way:

Looks great Paul! Where did you buy the wood? Is it just car-siding?

Looks great guys! Appreciate all the info and ideas. I haven't determined yet if I want to go with the pine from floor to ceiling or break it up with verticle pine on the lower 3 1/2' with sheet rock on the upper.

I will keep you posted on the project's progression.

Thanks!

Yes..."car siding" from Douds Lumber (is there someplace else?? :D )

They do carry it at Menards but I like to do business locally if I can.;)

Some folks run some of it on a 45 deg angle or break up a large area with some drywall. We did two walls with drywall and 2 walls and the ceiling with carsiding.

I hate drywall....I'll take the T&G anyday! :way:

Thanks for the info Paul. Tons of character in that wood, hard to find stuff with that many knots in it around here. You did good! :)

dbltree, I can't tell how that is finished up against the door and window jambs. Is the siding bevel cut down to meet the jamb or is there some matching casing there forming a pocket for the carsiding?

Either way it looks real nice. Sorry to hijack your thread darkarcher.

It's just butted up to the jamb and then I trimmed it out with 1x4 pine boards.

Where needed I made my own extension jambs so that it would be flush with the car siding. :)
