I'm not big on ladder stands either, I don't think I could ever hunt out of one to tell yah the truth. Im sure they work just fine, but I like to be highly versatile and move on a whim if need to be, sometimes walking over an hour into deep timber to get to a new area. so for me they are not practical but it sure looks like it is for others
Diito what LIV said.I do like being mobile. On some of the properties I hunt the fixed stands are in great spots,Edges of fields on funnels, and I will use them if the activity is there as well as the big boys but if I want to go into the woods farther or down from that stand I like having that option too.
i don't think that a ladder stand is going to bother deer movement. the main thing is that after you put one of these stands up you may have some deer travel patterns change for a year or two but eventually new deer being born or moving into the area will put them right back under the stand. i like the idea of having them in funnels but since i can't see putting a ladder stand out for someone to steal i will continue to stick with my climber and new lone wolf. on your own private ground they could be wonderfull though.
Liv, your style of hunting is not for ladder stands that is for sure. I hunt my own ground so the ladder stands are left out from year to year. If I ever go to state land or any other private ground I use portable stands but that not very often. I have a good mixture of ladder stands and portables on my place and hunting your own ground just feels better to me. Plus there are some good deer that come thru every once in awhile!!
I have one stand that is a real ladder stand. A 12 foot orange fibergalss ladder that a friend gave me because it had a cracked leg. I fixed it with angle iron and added a platform on top. It has been in the same spot for 5 years with a nice scrape 20 yards away for at least 3 years.
